💼 Samsung SDI: Between ESS Hopes and the Need for Proof - 2026.10.23
Hi, I’m Peanut. I’ll handle checking the numbers, so grab a coffee and listen in. ☕ This week, the conversation around Samsung SDI is crowded with expectations for ESS, all-solid-state battery mass production, and changes to cathode-material contracts. It’s good to see expectations building, but will they really pan out? First, we need to ask whether there are numbers to support them.
📉 Expectations are concentrated on ESS
After reports emerged that Chinese companies could be pushed out of the U.S. ESS market, Global Economic reported that Samsung SDI could benefit as a result [1]. There was also talk of a price-target increase, but that is an industry forecast, not a fact confirmed by the company [1]. Another article said the same expectations apply to the three major K-battery companies [2]. But that article also pointed out that securing production capacity is key [2]. Even if an opportunity comes along, you need factories capable of handling the volume. My question is simple: how quickly can expectations turn into actual orders?
💼 What the cathode-material contract changes mean
The report says POSCO Future M changed its cathode-material supply contract with Samsung SDI and shifted some NCA volume to LFP [3]. It also says the supply scale was expanded [3]. The article portrayed this as a survival decision to go all-in on “what makes money,” but that is the article’s interpretation, not a plan announced by Samsung SDI. I’ve deliberately left out the amount here. The figures couldn’t be cross-checked across sources, after all. From a fundamentals perspective, we need to check whether “what makes money” actually leads to profitability. Verifiable information is still limited.
⚠️ The technology news is promising, but timing is key
An Asia Times article described the transition of all-solid-state batteries from the technology-development stage to mass production, identifying the second half of 2027 as the decisive period [4]. M Today reported on ultra-fast charging using proprietary silicon anode material and tabless technology. It reported a charge from 8% to 80% in 9 minutes [5], but that is a report on a development achievement, so whether it leads to mass production or orders needs to be assessed separately. There is also analysis that the bankruptcy or postponed investments of companies such as Northvolt in Europe could create an opportunity for the three Korean companies with local factories [6]. That, too, is an analyst’s view, not confirmation of actual orders.
🛑 Let’s consider the bearish scenario, too
Despite the bullish mood, we need to keep the possibility of a value trap in mind. If talk of companies exiting the market builds expectations first, while confirmation of production capacity and earnings comes late, those expectations could fade again. The share price also slipped from the October 22 closing price of ₩515,000 to the October 23 closing price of ₩489,500, keeping the tension alive. Even from a short- to medium-term swing-trading perspective, Peanut sees the ESS story as conditional until it’s clear that expectations are translating into earnings. Can supply scale and production capacity support expectations in the third-quarter earnings announcement? That question holds the key to the next move.
