🧅 Hanwha Aerospace expands its export play with local production on the horizon - 2026.10.28

Well, well~ Defense industry news has been rolling in again today. After 30 years in the market, Onion can’t help but get excited on days like this 🧅

Additional orders from India, with numbers this time 📈

Reports say India will purchase an additional 300 K9 self-propelled howitzers, with about 2,800,000,000,000 KRW involved [1]. In India, Hanwha Aerospace and local company Larsen & Toubro (L&T) have partnered to produce the K9 Vajra, and the first batch of 100 units was also manufactured through this collaboration [1]. A broadcast report citing Indian news agency ANI says India plans to secure an additional 335 K9 Vajra units, with more than 70% expected to consist of locally made components [6]. The figures don’t quite match: 300 or 335. Still, both point to the possibility of additional purchases.

Seoul Economic Daily reported that the way is looking clear for additional exports to India [2]. But we’ll need more reports to see whether a contract has actually been finalized. The key point here is that a green light and a confirmed contract are two different things. With self-propelled howitzers popping up so often, it’s time to get self-propelled into a good mood—ha! Now that I’ve slipped in a dad joke, let’s get to the main point.

Beyond selling equipment, they’re building factories too 🚀

The really interesting part of this trend is that the export model is changing. Beyond exporting K9 self-propelled howitzers and Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers, Hanwha Aerospace is expanding its business footprint by establishing overseas production bases in Poland, Romania, and Australia [3]. The article describes this not as simple arms exports, but as an industrial export strategy that includes local production and supply chain expansion [3]. Put simply, it’s like a shop that used to just ship products now opening a factory in the neighboring town.

There’s movement in Europe, too. A KTV Policy K video covered news that Hanwha’s anti-aircraft guns are advancing into Europe [5]. The video description doesn’t give the contract size or terms, though, so for now it’s best to note only the direction of travel.

Space isn’t quiet either

Defense isn’t the only busy area. Reports say Hanwha Aerospace, a domestic private-sector company, expanded its role in this launch, including operating consoles at the launch control center [4]. This was presented as part of a broader shift: transferring launch vehicle technology developed by the government and research institutions to companies, and moving toward privately led commercial launch services [4]. The countdown to becoming a space power is turning into a question of who gets to sit next to the launch button. What did I tell you~ Looking at only one side of the defense business gives you only half the picture.

Share price movement and questions still to answer

Looking at recent closing prices, the stock started at ₩792,000 on October 20, slid to ₩786,000, on the 23rd and ₩753,000 on the 26th, then recovered to ₩773,000, on the 27th and ₩784,000 on the 28th. On the 28th, it was up +2.08% from the previous day. The data doesn’t show net purchases by foreign investors or institutions, so I’ll leave out the supply-and-demand discussion this time. Well, the market’s back to life! You might think the market is applauding—but let’s stay calm, because it’s easy to get carried away by a single number.

Onion sees a clear bullish scenario if additional Indian purchases and local production turn into actual contracts and results. Still, there are plenty of green lights and reports, while confirmed figures remain scarce. So there are three things to watch now: whether an additional contract with India is actually finalized, whether the figure settles at 300 or 335 units, and when local production starts showing up in the numbers. Keep the engine program on the list, too. Which of these variables are you most curious about? 🔥
