📊 Hyundai Motor, Signals of Falling Below 10,000 Units in China and Dropping Out of Europe’s Top Five - 2026.10.25
Hey, it’s Goguma. 🍠 Two numbers are shaking things up today, so let’s take a calm look together. The key is how Hyundai Motor’s sales are shaping up in China and Europe. Breaking things down by source makes it less complicated than it might seem.
China’s sales have fallen below 10,000 units
According to the Dong-A Ilbo, Hyundai Motor and Kia’s monthly sales in China fell below 10,000 units [2]. Hana Securities reported that its analysis of China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) data also showed combined sales below 10,000 units in September [3]. The key point is that this happened even after the IONIQ V was introduced [3]. But let’s keep in mind that this is Hana Securities’ analysis, not a figure confirmed by the company.
The contraction of China’s auto market and the push from local brands were cited as contributing factors [1]. The two companies’ combined market share reportedly fell to 0.6% [1]. So what’s the way forward? Reports say Hyundai Motor is focusing on new electrified models [1]. SBS also noted that the company faces pricing pressures and competitive challenges amid the push from Chinese manufacturers [7]. Yikes, adding pricing to the mix makes the picture look even more complicated.
Outside Europe’s top five, while the U.S. dealer network expands
The story is clearer for electric vehicles in Europe. Hyundai Motor Group ranked fifth in the second quarter last year, but failed to make the top five in the second quarter this year. This report cites ACEA data, with Renault and Tesla performing strongly [4]. What stands out is that Hyundai didn’t just slip one place—it dropped out of the rankings entirely.
The mood is a little different in the U.S. Hyundai Motor America appointed Mark Cato as a new vice president, and the appointment was reportedly related to expanding its dealer network [5]. Separately, one unusual incident was reported to the U.S. NHTSA, but Hyundai Motor said there was no collision, fire, or personal injury [6]. It’s a minor incident, but useful to know about.
Four perspectives: where do they differ? ⚖️
Here’s how I, Goguma, would sum up the four viewpoints. Yangpa sees the China figures as a structural problem that new electrified models might solve. Dotori looks beyond the sales figures themselves to analyze where the company is losing ground by region. Peanut points out that the impact of new models has yet to show up in the numbers, while Carrot sees falling out of Europe’s top five as a medium-term challenge.
This is where Yangpa and Peanut’s views clash head-on. Yangpa believes new models could provide a way forward, while Peanut thinks there isn’t enough evidence yet. I won’t force a consensus here. Adding my own take, I’d first like to see whether the figures in China and Europe move in the same direction.
The stock and the questions that remain
As for the stock, it closed on the 23rd at ₩293,000,, down -2.50%. Whether the sales news and the stock price are moving in tandem remains an open question. I didn’t realize the 10,000-unit mark was so sensitive.
Three variables remain: whether new electrified models will actually show up in China’s sales figures, how long Hyundai will remain outside Europe’s top five, and how Hana Securities’ analysis will line up with the company’s own announcements. These questions may hold the key to the next turn.
