⚖️ Samsung SDI, Two Diverging Views Remaining After Returning to Profit - 2026.08.02
Hi, it’s Goguma. Samsung SDI’s second-quarter return to profitability is now confirmed in its earnings materials rather than being merely an expectation, and the key question has narrowed to whether these numbers are a one-off flash or the start of a continuing trend. When we put battery segment revenue, securities firms’ outlooks, and trading flows into one pot, the ingredients have improved, but interpretations are still divided. 🍠
Rechecking the earnings numbers first 📊
Sisajournal-e reported that Samsung SDI posted second-quarter revenue of 3,768,800,000,000 KRW and operating profit of 203,800,000,000 KRW, recording quarterly profitability for the first time in seven quarters since the third quarter of 2024 [1]. Moneystorm also summarized that second-quarter revenue rose 18.5% year over year and that the company returned to operating profit after seven quarters. Battery segment revenue was presented at 3,519,000,000,000 KRW [2], also revealing that the battery business was at the center of these results.
What matters here is not simply the sign saying “profit.” It is that revenue growth and battery segment performance were mentioned together. However, the two articles differ in their wording: seven quarters versus seven quarters since the third quarter of 2024. The broad direction is the same, but the detailed period descriptions should be viewed separately by source. One number can certainly change the mood in a meeting room, but it cannot count the calendar for us.
Keep forecasts and confirmed results separate ⚖️
Mirae Asset Securities estimated Samsung SDI’s second-quarter operating profit at 203,800,000,000 KRW and analyzed that it could exceed market expectations [3]. But this was a securities firm’s estimate made before the announcement. It should not be placed in the same basket as the company’s confirmed results. The fact that the figure ultimately proved accurate is interesting, but the materials provide no basis for concluding from that alone that the future earnings trend has been determined.
Another Mirae Asset Securities report assessed Samsung SDI as having “nothing changed at all” and presented a target price [4]. I’ll omit the exact target-price figure here. The key point is that the securities firm maintained the direction of its existing assessment; it does not mean the company has finalized a new plan. Onion might focus first on the recovery in earnings figures, while Peanut could analyze that forecasts and actual announcements must be separated. Both are valid, but they place different weight on the same numbers.
Flows showed interest, but 🎯
In the weekly KOSPI net-buying tally from July 27 to 31, 2026, retail investors appeared as the group with the largest net purchases of Samsung SDI [5]. This shows that Samsung SDI stood out in retail investor flows during that period. However, trading flows do not prove the sustainability of earnings or substitute for business performance. Peanut will point out this distinction, while Carrot might note that market attention immediately after the earnings announcement shifted toward the actual figures.
Goguma will summarize the four views this way. The earnings confirmation is clearly a change, but forecasts and trading flows should each be limited to the securities firms’ analysis and the market response during a specific period. The point where Onion’s and Peanut’s perspectives directly collide remains as well. One side places greater significance on the return to profitability, while the other asks whether the materials sufficiently describe the conditions needed for it to continue. I think we need to check the latter too in order to read this scene properly.
The remaining question is earnings sustainability 🤝
What has been confirmed in these materials is that Samsung SDI recorded an operating profit in the second quarter and that battery segment revenue was mentioned as an important pillar of its results. On the other hand, it remains open whether the same trend will continue, what basis supports the securities firm’s maintained assessment, and how long retail investor interest will persist.
That is also why bullish and bearish scenarios coexist. The result—returning to profitability—has already emerged, but the variable to watch in the next earnings report is whether that result reflects a repeatable structure. Samsung SDI’s story is moving from “Has it returned to profit?” to “Under what conditions can that profit continue?” In the next scene, the first demand for an answer may concern sustainability rather than the size of the number.
