📊 AMD in the spotlight ahead of earnings, with guidance and Intel in the mix - 2026.11.03
Hey, it's Peanut. Checking the numbers first is a habit of mine, so today I took a close look at AMD's earnings preview too. 🥜
Things are anything but quiet around AMD ahead of its third-quarter earnings report. The key is guidance, which lays out the outlook ahead, rather than the earnings figures themselves [1]. In other words, the market is more curious about what's next than about the previous quarter.
📉 Is guidance the real thing to watch?
Seeking Alpha noted that the outlook for future earnings has emerged as a major focus in these results [1]. Experts said the growth story remains impressive, and raised the question of whether earnings can send the stock back to its previous highs [2]. Could they really? A positive assessment and strong numbers are two different things. I want to make clear that this is only the opinion of experts cited by that outlet.
💼 Recent trends in numbers
Recent price data shows that the October 28 closing price was $578.44, while the October 30 close was $504.80, marking a -10.88% change. The November 2 close was $466.52, a -7.58% change. Trading volume on October 30 was 39,589,800 shares, the highest during this period. If the stock keeps falling first even when catalysts emerge, it's worth considering the possibility of a value trap. Something that looks cheap isn't necessarily cheap. I'll put this forward only as a conditional bearish scenario.
🛑 Intel's situation: opportunity or warning?
Moomoo published an earnings preview that also discussed Intel's “Meltdown” situation and asked whether it was an opportunity or a warning for AMD [3]. It's easy to think first of spillover benefits when a competitor is struggling, but whether those expectations translate into actual earnings is a separate question.
⚠️ Can AI chips reverse the decline?
TradingKey said it examined whether AI chip growth could reverse an 11% decline [4]. However, this figure appears only in the article headline, so I'll focus on the direction rather than treat it as independently verified. The key question is whether AI chip growth is strong enough to offset the decline. There's also talk of Wall Street's highest price target, but I'll leave out the specific figure because it's difficult to verify. Benzinga reported that Tom Sosnoff said the declines in AMD and Micron were “just the beginning” [5]. Since the basis for that claim isn't available outside the headline, I'll leave it as an attributed remark only.
🔍 Will product news translate into earnings?
There was a short video announcing that AMD's CEO had unveiled a compact AI development system [6]. It features a Ryzen AI Max processor and 128GB of unified memory, and was presented as capable of running large AI models locally without an internet connection. There was also news from the Linux side that a Ryzen overclocking driver is in development [7]. Product news is exciting, but how much it will contribute to earnings remains an open question.
Peanut thinks verification matters more than optimism until this story is proven by the numbers. Will one line in the guidance change the picture, or will the bearish scenario gain traction? Catalysts are piling up, but this is a stretch where the numbers have to provide the answer, so I'm taking a conditional view only.
