⚖️ LIG D&A’s Stock Moves Between U.S. Bighung Cooperation and Renewed Attention on Cheongung-II - 2026.10.15

Hi, it’s Goguma. 🍠 Today, news about U.S. cooperation on Bighung and Saudi Arabia’s Cheongung-II arrived all at once, making the picture pretty complicated. Let’s work through it step by step.

🍠 U.S. cooperation: Bighung targets the U.S. military procurement market

LIG D&A has joined forces with U.S. company Firehawk to develop a rocket motor for Bighung, a 2.75-inch guided rocket for the U.S. military [1]. The company appears to view this as a stepping stone toward entering the U.S. military procurement market. Bighung is a precision-guided weapon system developed jointly by LIG D&A and the Agency for Defense Development in 2015, and the company has participated in the AUSA exhibition since 2018, back when it was known as LIG Nex1 [1].

A column reads the significance of this agreement as a signal that goes beyond recognition of the system’s performance and points to entry into the U.S. procurement and production system [6]. That, however, is the columnist’s interpretation, not a plan or outcome confirmed by the company. The column also makes clear that it is not drawing firm conclusions about the company’s intentions or business results.

🤝 Saudi Arabia’s Cheongung-II: Air defense is back in focus

Following the attack on Riyadh airport, K-defense companies are once again drawing attention as Saudi Arabia reviews its air defenses [2]. In November 2023, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense signed a 3,200,000,000 USD contract with LIG Nex1 to acquire Cheongung-II, with the order reportedly covering 10 batteries. The value is reportedly about 4,000,000,000,000 KRW in Korean won [2]. The contract was publicly disclosed through South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense in February 2024 [2], and reports have said the first units could be delivered starting in 2028 [7].

With Houthi attacks and controversy over Chinese-made components also in the mix, more articles have begun explaining Cheongung-II’s role again [7]. What’s interesting is how the same contract takes on a completely different face depending on the news topic. It’s like the same chess piece taking on a different role each time the board changes.

⚖️ Where does the stock stand?

Looking at the recent trend, the stock fell from a closing price of ₩712,000 on October 6 to ₩619,000, on October 8 and ₩564,000 on October 13, before rebounding to ₩577,000 on October 14. The regular-session closing price on October 15 was ₩546,000. One report also cited 543,000 KRW on an after-hours basis, which can make it unclear which price is being used [3]. The numbers alone suggest a sizeable gap between expectations and where the stock currently stands.

But it’s not yet clear what might close that gap. Whether U.S. cooperation will actually reach the procurement stage and how the Cheongung-II delivery schedule will take shape are both open questions.

🎯 What remains undecided, and Goguma’s take

There’s also some uncomfortable news. One report said that additional borrowing followed a payment to the owner family, and described the flow of funds as a management-sensitive matter [4]. The same article also covered the company’s history of procurement restrictions over the falsification of test reports by a partner company during the LIG Nex1 era [4]. Since this relies on a single report, it seems better to focus on the general direction rather than take every detail and figure at face value.

Another article reported that the head of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration called the LIG bribery-suspicion case devastating to the organization’s reputation, and identified the 20th as a turning point for sanctions over defense industry corruption [5]. Since a date is involved, I’ll leave this as something to watch.

Here’s how I’d sum up the views of the four contributors. I won’t force their views into a single line. Bullish and bearish scenarios coexist, and the differences between them have yet to be resolved. In my view, the first step is to separate export contract figures from issues that are still undecided.

So two questions remain: Will cooperation on Bighung actually reach the U.S. military procurement stage, and how might the sanctions decision date affect orders and earnings? We’ll need answers to those questions to make sense of the closing-price trend. 🍠
