📊 Samsung Heavy Industries, Orders and Technology Issues After Achieving Its Merchant Ship Target - 2026.08.03
Hi, it’s Goguma. The key change at Samsung Heavy Industries today is that it surpassed its merchant ship order target ahead of schedule. With two additional crude oil tankers secured, the order trend has become clearer, but the picture gets more complicated when the stock price and technology issues are considered together. There are quite a few variables to examine beyond simply celebrating the orders 🍠
The Merchant Ship Order Target Has Already Been Surpassed
News has emerged that Samsung Heavy Industries won orders for two crude oil tankers from a European shipping company. The contract value was reported as 268,000,000,000 KRW, and cumulative orders in the merchant ship division this year reportedly rose to 34 vessels and 5,800,000,000 USD [3]. Electronic Times also reported that the company had won the same two crude oil tankers and achieved its merchant ship order target ahead of schedule [1].
MoneyToday explained that this contract brought achievement of this year’s merchant ship order target to 102% [2]. The wording of the figures varies slightly by article, but one fact is common across them. Samsung Heavy Industries has already filled its merchant ship target for this year. Continued orders centered on LNG carriers and crude oil tankers were also mentioned [4], showing where the vessel mix is concentrated.
What matters here is separating the achievement itself from the questions that follow. The fact that the target was exceeded is clear, but from this point onward, the next issue is what types of vessels and contract terms additional orders will involve, and how they will actually appear in the company’s results. The large order pot has begun to boil, but we still need to see what is inside it.
The Stock Price Cannot Be Explained by Order News Alone ⚖️
Based on the latest trading days, Samsung Heavy Industries closed at ₩20,850, on August 3, with a change of -2.34% and trading volume of 2,279,218. On the preceding July 30 and 31, it closed at ₩20,550, and ₩21,350, respectively. This shows that news of achieving the order target and the stock’s daily movement do not necessarily move in the same direction.
This appears less like one side being wrong and more like a scene in which the market is weighing several factors at once. Order news is one pillar of the business trend, while factors not specified in the articles, such as the timing of earnings recognition or the industry climate, may also affect the stock price. However, I won’t add such factors as though they were confirmed facts. Goguma’s four-person view is this: Achieving the order target is a confirmed fact, while the stock’s direction requires separate examination.
Technology Issues Require Separating Possibilities from Confirmed Facts 🤝
Regarding floating data centers, reports have introduced claims that Samsung Heavy Industries was the first among Korea’s three major shipbuilders to complete a 50 MW-class basic design, and that it received conceptual design certification from the American Bureau of Shipping and Lloyd’s Register in the United Kingdom last April [6]. However, the material is marked as a third-party outlook. Therefore, what can be confirmed here extends only to the claims concerning design completion and certification. There is no basis to expand this into the company’s business intentions, cash flow, or confirmed results.
This is an example of why new businesses should be viewed more calmly as their names grow larger. The 50 MW-class basic design and conceptual design certification were cited as technological progress, but they alone cannot establish the business scale or profitability. The claim that the technology door has opened and the actual development of the business are different doors.
Patent Litigation Should Be Viewed by Separating Procedure from Conclusion 🎯
Reports have also said that Samsung Heavy Industries gained the upper hand in its patent dispute with Steelhead LNG, a Canadian LNG industry developer [5]. The article title and summary said that the situation was developing in Samsung Heavy Industries’ favor based on a determination that the Canadian LNG technology lacked inventiveness. However, this too should be treated as a reported stage in the dispute. Connecting it directly to confirmed business gains or financial improvement goes beyond the scope of the material.
In summary, the merchant ship division has the clearest fact: achievement of its target. Data center design and the patent dispute are separate tracks related to technology and rights. Rather than bundling them together into one conclusion, it is appropriate to examine vessel types and contract trends separately in orders, and actual developments after certification and the dispute procedures separately on the technology side. One question remains. How will merchant ship orders beyond the target be reflected in subsequent results, and what additional facts will the technology issues lead to?
