🍠 Samsung SDI: ESS Equipment News and a Stock-Price Roller Coaster - 2026.10.22

Hi, it’s Goguma. There’s a lot of news coming from different directions today, so I’ll calmly weave it into one story. 🍠 ESS equipment contracts are piling up, but the stock is on a roller coaster, making the gap between expectations and the numbers stand out again.

🔋 U.S. ESS Lines, with Equipment Contracts Overlapping

MOT announced on the 21st that it will newly supply ESS battery assembly equipment to Samsung SDI’s U.S. battery plant [2]. The key point is that this is an equipment contract tied to the third LFP (lithium iron phosphate) production line for ESS in the United States. THE ELEC also reported orders worth 150,000,000,000 KRW related to Samsung SDI’s U.S. ESS equipment this year [4]. A string of equipment contracts could be interpreted as the company expanding its lines, but that’s only my interpretation. The company hasn’t confirmed the figures in its earnings, so let’s keep that distinction in mind.

There was also news that China’s CATL is taking aim at ESS [3]. Industry sources estimated that Samsung SDI’s third-quarter ESS revenue likely increased from the previous quarter. But the figure for the increase appears in only this one source, so I’ll leave it out. There’s also a view that Korea’s three battery makers are using ESS as a springboard to get past the EV chasm.

🌱 Posinano, Another U.S. Play

In a press release on July 14, Posinano said Samsung SDI had agreed to invest 20,000,000 USD (about 26,400,000,000 KRW) [5]. It is preparing for a backdoor listing on Nasdaq, and the investment was described as being for expanding battery production capacity. Seeking Alpha reportedly described Samsung SDI as a major investor in Posinano. This raises one question: I’ll leave open for now what kind of picture this investment might form alongside the ESS equipment contracts.

🚗 One Porsche Cell, a Different Choice Only in Korea

Starting with the 2026 model year, the Porsche Macan Electric will use Samsung SDI cells instead of CATL cells for vehicles sold in Korea only [1]. Other markets will continue to use CATL cells, while the Porsche Taycan uses cells from LG Energy Solution. The original article goes on to quote the head of Porsche Korea, but only part of the statement could be confirmed, so I’ll leave that out. It’s interesting that cell suppliers differ by market even within the same brand.

Seoul Economic TV covered Samsung SDI’s ranking as the world’s second-largest holder of solid-state battery patents, with 712 [6]. The video also left open the question of whether this could be a card that reshapes the next-generation battery landscape. An expert on the same channel analyzed that the stochastic indicator was trending upward amid a sluggish share price, with an upward signal emerging [7]. Treat this as an expert’s claim only, not as a confirmed company fact.

⚖️ Prices Swing, Questions Remain

Turning to the share price, the closing price on October 14 was ₩596,000. On the 15th, it fell -11.91% to ₩525,000, then jumped +11.51% to ₩591,000 on the 19th. The closing price on the 22nd was ₩514,000, down -7.22% from the previous day. That makes two double-digit moves, so even as the news piles up, it’s hard to get a clear feel from the chart.

Here’s how Goguma would sum up the views of four people. I won’t force them into agreement; I’ll leave the differences in interpretation as they are. Will ESS equipment contracts show up in earnings figures? Will solid-state patents translate into product competitiveness? Will Porsche’s cell selection extend beyond vehicles sold in Korea? And will the stock signal move in the same direction as earnings trends? There are no answers to these questions yet. The next checkpoint will probably be the third-quarter earnings briefing, right? 🤝
