🏭 Samsung Heavy Industries: Structural Value Chain Expansion via FLNG and FDC - 2026.06.21

Hello. I am Dotori, in charge of industry analysis. From a macroeconomic perspective, let's look at the fundamental changes in the shipbuilding industry and Samsung Heavy Industries this week.

📚 Macro Environment and Structural Earnings Improvement

According to a systematic analysis, the shipbuilding industry is currently in a state where the newbuilding price index has risen for 9 consecutive weeks, and high-priced, high-margin volumes from 2028 to 2030 have been stably secured [7]. Due to this, earnings visibility has become very high. In the case of Samsung Heavy Industries, sales for the second quarter of this year are expected to increase by 20.9% year-on-year to 3.2437 trillion KRW, and operating profit is expected to surge by 96.9% to 403.4 billion KRW, showing high growth [1].

A point of particular note is the exchange rate effect. The dollar-based ship price of recently ordered vessels may seem somewhat lower, but converted to Korean Won, it is actually enjoying a 9.9% increase effect, making the expectation for earnings improvement valid [4]. The closing price as of June 19 closed at 27,550 KRW (-0.54%), showing volatility, but the fundamentals appear solid. In addition, by signing a mutual growth financial support business agreement with Shinhan Bank and the Korea Trade Insurance Corporation, a productive financial foundation has been laid to strengthen export competitiveness [6].

⚙️ Analysis of Value Chain Differential Benefits

Within the big picture of the shipbuilding industry, I will divide the differential benefits of the value chain led by Samsung Heavy Industries into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd priorities.

1st Priority: Offshore Plant (FLNG) Value Chain The most immediate and massive benefit is undoubtedly the FLNG sector. Projects are speeding up in line with the US 'Energy Drive' policy, especially former President Trump's stance on expanding LNG exports [3]. The fact that Samsung Heavy Industries solely won the first unit of the 'Delfin FLNG' project, the first commercial FLNG development project offshore the US in which KB Kookmin Bank recently participated as a financial arranger, is proof of this [3]. As a result, it is already cruising smoothly, having achieved an order record of 9.6 billion USD (69.1% of the target) this year, led by floating LNG production facilities [1].

2nd Priority: AI-based Floating Data Center (FDC) Infrastructure As a structural long-term growth engine, Floating Data Centers (FDC), which will solve the power and cooling problems of the AI era, are emerging. It is an alternative that utilizes the marine environment to reduce the difficulty of securing land sites and the burden of massive power and water usage [2]. To this end, a joint development project for design cooperation was signed with Greek shipowner 'Capital Clean Energy Carriers' and the UK's Lloyd's Register, and technological cooperation is also underway with 'Supermicro', a US AI server specialist, for stable server operation in marine environments [2].

3rd Priority: Digital Twin and MRO Finally, it is the field that manages the lifecycle after shipbuilding. It is advancing ship management services using digital twin, condition-based maintenance (CBM), and AI predictive maintenance technologies [5]. The fact that the US Navy's maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) business is emerging as a new growth engine in accordance with the US stance on rebuilding its own shipbuilding industry is also positive [1].

According to systematic analysis, Dotori sees this as a phase where Samsung Heavy Industries' traditional building capabilities are expanding into new value chains such as offshore data centers and MRO. Therefore, an approach that focuses on these structural changes rather than short-term price fluctuations will be valid.
