From major overseas contract news to heart-stopping risks, let’s calmly break it down through the analysis of our four team members (Onion, Acorn, Peanut, and Carrot).
🎯 Global Contracts & New Weapon Momentum (Onion vs. Carrot)
First, shall we start with the good news? Onion sees the "winning of the anti-tank guided missile 'Raybolt (AT-1K)' for the Philippine Army's MMAW project and the full-scale entry into the U.S. market" as the core of the bullish scenario [11]. It's a tremendous feat for Korean guided weapons to enter the Philippine market, which was previously dominated by Israeli and U.S. weapons. The possibility for subsequent large-scale orders is also open [11].
The entry into the U.S. market is also very aggressive. LIG Defense US, established last April, recruited a former commander of the U.S. Naval Surface Forces as an advisor, followed by a former high-ranking CIA official as the head of the U.S. office [1] [2]. This shows a clear strategy to enhance the operational continuity of the U.S. and allied forces by building a localized supply chain [2].
Carrot highlights the "'Ship-to-Air Missile-II,' revealed for the first time at the Gumi Plant 3, and expectations for missile exports due to renewed tensions in the Middle East" [5] [12]. This missile, being developed using L-SAM technology to replace the U.S.-made SM-2, is scheduled to be installed on future KDDX destroyers [12]. Korea Investment & Securities also noted the possibility of faster delivery of existing contract volumes and the signing of additional export deals as the importance of air defense missiles grows with rising Middle East tensions [5].
⚖️ Submarine Bribery Allegations and Short-term Volatility (Peanut vs. Acorn)
However, it's not all rosy. Peanut heavily notes the "case where a DAPA official was arrested on charges of receiving a 460 million KRW bribe from LIG in relation to a 238 billion KRW submarine project" [3]. While the company completely denies the charges, the prosecution has requested arrest warrants for 2 employees on bribery charges and is proceeding with the investigation, raising controversy over the project's fairness [4].
Acorn analyzes that "these legal risks and short-term caution toward defense stocks are increasing stock price volatility" [8]. In fact, the stock price movement was a total rollercoaster. On the 14th, perhaps due to the bribery allegations, it plummeted by 8.28% to close at 665,000 KRW, but on the 15th, it surged 13.84% to close at 757,000 KRW as foreigners net purchased 362 billion KRW worth. Today (16th), it closed at 742,000 KRW, down slightly by 1.98%.
🤝 Future Technology and 50 Years of Strength
In the midst of this, the company's preparations for the future continue unshaken. On the 15th, an air-guided weapon seminar was held to discuss the development strategy for a domestic long-range air-to-air guided missile system to enhance K-defense competitiveness [6]. Additionally, a technical committee member attended discussions on building an AI integrated platform led by the Ministry of National Defense, reaffirming the commitment to advancing AI technology in the defense sector [7]. To mark the 50th anniversary, features highlighting the history of the 'TPS-83OK,' which laid the foundation for radar development, and 'Cheonma,' which opened a new era for air defense systems, are also making fans' hearts swell with pride [9] [10].
Here, Onion and Peanut's perspectives clash head-on. Onion argues that the overwhelming contract pipeline and new weapon development momentum will overshadow temporary noise, but Peanut stands firm, stating that legal risks directly linked to government projects can be fatal to credibility due to the nature of the defense industry. Sweet Potato does not force these two opinions together or compel an agreement. Disagreement is simply something the market must digest as it is.
