🥜 Between PBR Bottom Theory and Value Trap: Samsung Electronics by the Numbers - 2026.07.17

Hi, shareholders. This is Peanut from BultagiCom.

Recently, Samsung Electronics' stock price has been moving sideways near 255,000 KRW without a clear direction, and the "PBR bottom theory" is starting to emerge in the market. Looking through brokerage reports, rosy outlooks suggesting an immediate turnaround are dominant. But is that really the case? Let's break it down with numbers as we always do.

💼 AI Value Chain and CAPEX: Is the Fundamental Solid?

First, let's look at the factors supporting the bullish scenario. As Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang directly mentioned the mass production of the next-generation AI GPU platform 'Vera Rubin,' the outlook for Samsung Electronics' next-generation HBM4 supply expansion is gaining momentum [2]. Beyond this, the company is strengthening its push into the high-performance solution market targeting global Big Tech by entering mass production of PCIe 6.0 eSSDs based on 9th-generation V-NAND [3]. This is interpreted as an attempt to break through the limitations of the single-product supply chain beyond simple memory supply.

The scale of investment is also worth noting. Major forecasting institutions expect the capital expenditure (CAPEX) of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to expand to 120 trillion KRW this year and 150 trillion KRW next year, driven by the semiconductor boom [5]. There is an underlying expectation that this massive investment could lead directly to future performance and market share expansion.

Short-term momentum is also waiting in the mobile sector. At the 'Galaxy Unpacked' to be held next week on July 22, 2026, a new wide-type model lineup with improved durability through Flex Titanium technology and a larger screen is expected to be added [4]. The fact that a long-standing patent infringement lawsuit related to 6th-generation Wi-Fi in the US was withdrawn through mutual agreement, relieving one legal risk, is also a positive aspect [8].

Looking at it this way, the fundamentals in both semiconductors and mobile seem quite solid. Brokerages are releasing analyses stating that although the correction in the semiconductor sector was large, the cycle is not over and PBR is close to bottom levels [1]. Some even voice strong opinions that it might be difficult to see this price level again [10].

⚠️ Shadows of a Value Trap: Why Caution is Needed

However, even amidst the bullish atmosphere, we must coolly examine the bearish scenario. Is right now a complete opportunity? Should we jump in just because PBR is at a bottom level?

Internal noise is significant. The fact that retail investors have initiated collective action following the news of a 40 trillion KRW performance bonus payout deserves close attention [6]. There is strong dissatisfaction that while the stock price is undergoing a decline and correction phase, the gap with the size of the performance bonuses is too large. Market doubts about governance and shareholder return policies can ultimately become a key factor in valuation multiple discounts.

Furthermore, amid the concentration of investment in Samsung Electronics and Hynix, controversies over the effectiveness of regulations, such as measures to strengthen requirements for single-stock leverage ETFs, are acting as factors that increase market volatility [9]. In terms of the macro environment, there is a risk of increased environmental regulation compliance costs, such as administrative recommendations from local governments to reduce wastewater discharge [7]. We cannot exclude the possibility that these non-financial risks and noises will hold back the fundamentals.

🛑 Peanut's Perspective: Profit-taking and Swing Strategy

When approaching from a short-to-medium-term swing perspective, one needs to be cautious about blindly increasing positions just by looking at PBR figures or rosy outlooks from brokerages. Is it verifiable how much the positive news of AI memory supply expansion and new mobile product launches has already been priced in?

Peanut believes there is a risk that the current PBR bottom theory could act as a Value Trap. If the HBM4 supply timeline or the results of the Unpacked event fail to meet the market's high expectations, we must leave the possibility of disappointment selling wide open. Rather, if a short-term technical rebound occurs, it might be time to consider it as a candidate for profit-taking trimming and think about conservative weight adjustment. Numbers have no emotions, so let's exclude our emotions entirely and carefully weigh the gap between fundamentals and valuation.
