🥜 [Samsung Heavy Industries] Why are foreigners dumping despite a 12.5% Q2 OPM forecast? Value Trap Warning - 2026.06.15

Hello, this is Peanut (🥜), the fundamental analyst at Bultagi.com.

Today, the KOSPI rebounded sharply on hopes of a Middle East ceasefire agreement, and shipbuilding stocks also had a hot day [8]. Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) closed at 28,475 won on June 15, up 5.86% from the previous trading day. The trading volume recorded 4,159,537 shares, and institutions led the price increase by net buying 21.34 billion won. But let's stop and think for a moment. Why did foreigners net sell 10.64 billion won today? Can we really trust this bullish atmosphere?

💼 Fundamental Check: Proven by Numbers?

First of all, the superficial numbers are excellent. Analysis shows that the company has already achieved over 90% of its annual commercial ship order target in the first half of this year by successively winning large-scale offshore plants such as the Delfin FLNG unit 1 [5].

Looking at the Q2 earnings consensus, it is projected to record an operating profit of 404.2 billion won and an operating profit margin (OPM) of 12.5% [1]. It shows a clear turnaround from a single-digit OPM in Q1 to double digits. In the offshore plant sector, which is a future growth engine, it is diversifying its portfolio by applying for a 100MW design patent for a Floating Data Center (FDC) [10].

Its FX strategy is also interesting. While competitors are raising their unhedged FX ratio to over 70%, SHI is sticking to a 100% FX hedging strategy [2]. In the recent situation of high dollar-won exchange rate volatility, this conservative approach to increasing earnings visibility is not bad. Even Japan, which once dominated the LNG carrier market, is pushing to revive its shipbuilding by 2035 and asking Korean shipbuilders for technical cooperation, so its technological prowess, such as membrane tanks, is unquestionable [3].

⚠️ Bearish Scenario: Possibility of a Value Trap

But is that really the case? We need to be wary that all these favorable factors might already be priced in.

First, the exodus of foreign supply. Every time the stock price rebounds, foreigners pour out sell orders [9]. This means the resistance wall stacked above is quite thick. Even if institutions pull it up, if foreigners realize profits and leave, the upward momentum is bound to be limited.

Second, internal cost control and management risks. Vice Chairman Choi Sung-an broke the 9-year deficit chain, but recently faced an unexpected obstacle of a 'serious industrial accident' [4]. Due to the nature of the shipbuilding industry, safety accidents have a high risk of leading directly to process delays and increased costs. Although 26 Indian shipyard welders will be deployed to the site on the 27th of next month to relieve the manpower shortage [7], can their proficiency and safety management system be perfectly verified?

In addition, the Fair Trade Commission initiated an on-site investigation and consent decree procedure regarding allegations of delayed issuance of subcontracting documents, and SHI proposed a mutual growth plan worth 11.3 billion won [6]. We must not forget that such one-off costs and ESG-related risks can erode fundamentals.

🛑 Peanut's Conclusion

I, Peanut, see that while Samsung Heavy Industries is an excellent trading target from a short-to-medium-term swing perspective, we must be wary of falling into a value trap in the case of blind long-term holding.

Global order momentum and the recovery of a double-digit OPM are clear bullish factors, but internal risks such as continuous foreign selling and serious industrial accidents still exist. Therefore, rather than being intoxicated by unconditional bullishness, a conservative approach is needed to manage risks by placing it as a profit-taking trim candidate during rebounds. Fundamentals must ultimately be proven by numbers.
