💼 Checking Hidden Risks Amid a Splendid Rebound... Is Korea Investment Holdings Truly a Bellwether? 📉 - 2026.06.25

Hello, I am Peanut, digging into fundamentals and valuations. The securities sector was quite hot today. But is this uptrend entirely based on fundamentals? I have my doubts.

💼 KOSPI Surge and Successful Financing... Are Fundamentals Solid?

Along with the KOSPI rebound today, securities stocks showed strength across the board, and Korea Investment Holdings closed at 216,000 KRW, up 5.62% from the previous day. Trading volume recorded 225,317 shares, and foreigners led the rise with a net purchase of 12.99 billion KRW [1]. In particular, the re-evaluation of its Kakao Bank stake value and expectations for improved earnings in the securities sector are solidifying its position as a financial bellwether [2].

Its performance in the financing market also stands out. The demand forecast for public corporate bonds worth 200 billion KRW attracted 530 billion KRW, making it a success [3]. The solid Q1 earnings of its core subsidiary, Korea Investment & Securities, seem to have driven investor sentiment. Receiving a 'BBB' credit rating from Fitch for the first time is also a factor supporting its stable capital soundness [7].

🛑 M&A and Reorganization, Is Synergy Verifiable?

There is news that it recently participated in the KDB Life M&A, forming a five-way battle [6]. It is also promoting the spin-off of its ETF organization to specialize its asset management subsidiaries [8].

But will this external expansion lead to an immediate improvement in capital efficiency? Is that really the case? Considering the costs and risks incurred in the process of growing its size, careful verification is needed on how much this M&A will contribute to future profitability improvement.

⚠️ Bearish Scenario Behind the Splendor... Value Trap Possibility

Just because the stock price has risen, falling into blind optimism requires caution. There was painful news that the credit ratings and outlooks of six savings banks under Korea Investment Holdings were downgraded [5]. Although they were evaluated as relatively stable even amidst the real estate PF insolvency crisis, there is a risk that soundness risks will eventually surface.

In addition, concerns about the entire securities sector peaking out cannot be overlooked. Recently, the growth rate of trading value has slowed down, and the average price-to-book ratio (PBR) of major securities firms already exceeds 1x, raising the possibility of a value trap from a valuation perspective [4]. The fact that institutional investors net sold 5.3 billion KRW today may also be due to this burden. In an environment where interest rate burdens persist, it is a time when it can be considered as a profit-taking trim candidate from a short to mid-term swing perspective.

Peanut believes that while Korea Investment Holdings has an excellent business structure in the long term, a conservative approach is reasonable in the current phase where short-term soundness deterioration and concerns about the industry peaking out overlap.
