📉 Doosan Enerbility Between Nuclear Hopes and Earnings Tests - 2026.10.16
Hi, it’s Peanut. Let’s start by checking the numbers together again today 🥜 The first news was that Doosan Enerbility plunged on the “Black Thursday” of the 15th [6]. But management news and talk of a joint investment in nuclear power also surfaced. It’s another day when expectations and prices are moving in different directions.
📉 Let’s break down the stock numbers first
Looking just at the closing prices in the table, the picture is pretty clear. The closing price was ₩68,900 on the 14th, but fell to ₩61,400 on the 15th, a change of -10.88%. On the 16th, it rose +1.74% to ₩64,400, showing signs of a rebound. But it’s far too early to call a trend based on a one-day rebound. Recall the ₩71,100 range, which was down -7.30% on the 12th: the stock has clearly lost quite a bit of ground in a short period. Is that really the case? There’s still no answer as to whether nuclear hopes were reflected directly in the share price or whether supply and demand pressures came first.
💼 Management changes and nuclear bets: news from two directions
First, the management changes. CFO Park Sang-hyun was promoted to vice chairman, and COO Song Yong-jin was named chief operating officer [4]. The company said the moves are intended to proactively respond to a rapidly changing energy environment and secure future growth drivers [5]. It’s a reshaping of both finance and operations, so it’s worth watching. However, management changes don’t immediately translate into earnings or orders, so for now, let’s read this simply as a sign of “what kind of structure the company is preparing.”
There’s even more noise around nuclear power. SK, Samsung C&T, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, and Doosan Enerbility are reportedly among the Korean companies considering acquiring a stake in U.S. nuclear power company Westinghouse [1]. A Seoul Economic TV video reported that SK, Samsung, and Doosan Enerbility were joining forces on an investment of 4,000,000,000,000 KRW that has sent ripples through the U.S. nuclear industry [7]. But since the investment figure came from just one source, I’ll leave it out here. The key point is that this is still a review, not a contract.
⚠️ Earnings expectations and the two sides of a lower price target
Maeil Business Newspaper Market reported that Doosan Enerbility’s third-quarter earnings this year are expected to fall short of market expectations [2]. This is only a forecast reported by the outlet, not something the company has confirmed. Hana Securities reportedly lowered its price target but maintained its Buy rating [3]. Looking only at the price target’s direction is discouraging, but keeping the rating unchanged paints a different picture. Is that really so? Can we verify whether the lowered expectations make the stock look cheap, or whether there’s a risk of a value trap, with the share price struggling to recover as earnings continue to fall short of expectations? What we need to watch here is where the third-quarter figures land relative to expectations.
🛑 Peanut’s conditional scenario
Peanut sees the Westinghouse stake review as conditional until it turns into actual orders and earnings. For a short- to medium-term swing, even when bullish talk emerges, we should account for the bearish scenario at least once. If earnings fall short of expectations and the management changes and nuclear review don’t translate into numbers, there’s a risk that the current rebound won’t last. On the other hand, the picture could change if nuclear discussions turn into a contract. But it’s not yet confirmed whether that condition will be met.
Three variables remain: where third-quarter earnings come in relative to expectations, whether the Westinghouse review advances to a contract, and whether the organizational reshuffle leads to actual growth. Which numbers do you want to see first?
