💼 Doosan Enerbility: Beware of the Hidden Value Trap Amidst SMR & AI Hype - 2026.06.11
Hello, Doosan Enerbility shareholders. This is Peanut, coldly analyzing fundamentals and valuations. Good job navigating the market today. While all sorts of rosy outlooks are pouring into the market, we must always look at the numbers with a cool head.
💼 Fundamental Check: The Dilemma of Gas Turbine Orders and Target Price Downgrades
Kiwoom Securities recently released quite an interesting report on Doosan Enerbility [1]. It states that gas turbine order opportunities for data center 'On-Site' power plants are continuously expanding [1]. Order opportunities for steam turbines linked to gas turbine demand are also growing; in fact, following the order for 2 initial steam turbine units from a US client in March, they secured an additional 4 units last month [1]. Based on this, new orders for this year are estimated at 16.3 trillion KRW, an 11% increase YoY [1].
But let's pause and think for a moment. Is that really the case? While the order outlook is positive, they actually lowered the target price from 158,000 KRW to 130,000 KRW [1]. Although they maintained a 'Buy' rating, the narrowed target price gap can be interpreted as a sign of valuation pressure. Now is the time for strict verification based on fundamentals rather than blind expectations.
📉 Stock Price Trend and Supply/Demand: 90k Breakdown and Short-to-Mid Swing Perspective
Looking at the stock price trend, concerns are becoming reality. Today's (June 11) closing price ended at 88,500 KRW, down 2.85% from the previous day. We barely held the 90,000 KRW line yesterday, but ended up surrendering it in just one day. The trading volume recorded 2,357,558 shares, and looking at the supply and demand entities, foreign investors net sold 35.89 billion KRW and institutions net sold 17.30 billion KRW, showing strong dual-selling pressure.
From a short-to-mid swing perspective, strong vigilance is required against such an exodus of major supply and demand. Although NH-Amundi Asset Management recently evaluated the stock price adjustment in the nuclear sector as a mid-to-long term entry opportunity [2], making hasty judgments in a downtrend can be dangerous.
⚠️ SMR and AI Alliance: Can It Be Proven with Numbers?
The hot potatoes in the market are undoubtedly AI and SMR. There is news that Doosan Enerbility's SMR technology is gaining attention as a power supply solution needed for large-scale data centers like Nvidia's 'AI Factory'. In step with this, the company is also expanding investments, deciding to build a new dedicated SMR factory to participate in the global supply chain [2].
Also, they recently visited the US with government officials to discuss energy investment and power grid cooperation plans with major companies like JP Morgan, ExxonMobil, and GE Vernova [3]. Brand value is also rising; in the '2026 Best Korea Brand Top 50' announced by Interbrand, they proudly ranked 44th, recording a brand value of 498.9 billion KRW armed with eco-friendly energy solutions like SMR [4].
🛑 Peanut's View: Bearish Scenario Amidst a Bullish Trend and Value Traps
It's a bullish atmosphere full of good news like global orders and inclusion in the AI power grid, but we must always prepare for the worst. Peanut believes that we should leave the possibility of a value trap open until the current expectations of benefiting from SMR and the AI power grid are actually printed as numbers on the financial statements.
The securities industry expects large-scale SMR equipment orders within the year if a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is signed within Q3 regarding the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) SMR project [1]. But what if there is a risk that this PPA signing or participation in the US large-scale nuclear power plant construction project is delayed?
A stock price that has been given a premium based solely on future expectations can become a candidate for rapid profit-taking trimming along with disappointment selling. Even if the long-term direction is correct, in the short term, taking a conservative approach while thoroughly checking for specific order disclosures and subsequent margin improvements is the way to protect your account.
I'll be back next time armed with facts and numbers.
