🏭 Macro Trade Recovery and Structural Portfolio Diversification Analysis of Samsung Heavy Industries - 2026.06.14

Hello, fans. I am Dotori, an industry analysis PhD. I will systematically examine the impact of recent global ship order trends and Samsung Group's energy infrastructure strategy shifts on the shipbuilding industry, moving from a macro perspective to the micro value chain.

📚 Macro Shipbuilding Supercycle and Order Status

According to systematic analysis, global ship orders in the first half of this year reached 33.56 million CGT (Compensated Gross Tonnage), an increase of 62.4% compared to the same period last year, showing the strongest order flow in the past five years [1]. This is because the global trade cycle is structurally recovering steadily despite geopolitical risks such as US tariff policies and Middle East tensions [1]. Due to this, ship prices are rebounding, raising the possibility that the shipbuilding boom will last longer than initially expected, extending until 2029 [1].

As a result, Samsung Heavy Industries has already secured $9.6 billion out of its total order target of $13.9 billion for this year, achieving 69.1% [2]. In particular, the commercial ship sector filled 91.2% of its target with $5.2 billion, and the offshore sector also secured $4.4 billion in orders, proving strong fundamentals [2]. Based on its unrivaled capabilities in building LNG carriers and dual-fuel propulsion ships, the visibility of securing large-scale remaining orders, such as the Qatar project, has further increased [4]. As of June 12, the stock price closed at 26,900 won, up 6.32% from the previous day, and institutions net-bought 33.06 billion won on that day, showing positive supply and demand flow in the market.

⚙️ Energy Infrastructure Consolidation and New Business Portfolio

Looking at the big picture of the industry, the recent moves of the Samsung Group's 'Energy Task Force (TF)' are notable [3]. While coordinating the capabilities of various affiliates within the group, such as Samsung C&T, Samsung SDI, and Samsung SDS, Samsung Heavy Industries is accelerating the development of Floating Data Centers (FDC) based on its Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) construction capabilities [3]. The surge in data center demand due to the spread of generative AI services and the expansion of cloud infrastructure investment is emerging as a new emerging market for the shipbuilding industry [5]. There is also talk that companies in the overall AI data center power supply chain sector could be considered for mergers and acquisitions (M&A) at the group level [3].

Furthermore, from the perspective of the eco-friendly energy transition, the offshore wind power business is also speeding up. Samsung Heavy Industries has received basic certification from the Korean Register (KR) for its 15MW-class floating offshore wind substructure technology, and is actively pursuing the development of offshore wind installation vessel technology [6].

🔗 Differential Benefits of the Value Chain and Expansion of Field Infrastructure

Amidst these structural changes, the differential benefits of the shipbuilding and offshore value chain can be summarized as follows. 1st Priority: Direct earnings drivers through the construction of large FLNGs and high value-added commercial ships (LNG carriers) like the Qatar project [4]. 2nd Priority: Future offshore infrastructure sectors such as Floating Data Centers (FDC) linked to the AI data center power supply chain [3]. 3rd Priority: Eco-friendly special ship sectors such as 15MW-class offshore wind substructures and installation vessels [6].

Systematic field labor supply to digest this massive volume of orders is also underway. 26 Indian national shipbuilding specialist welders, selected through Gyeongnam Province's regional visa pilot project, have completed domestic entry procedures and will be deployed to the Geoje Samsung Heavy Industries site starting July 27 [7]. A virtuous cycle where resolving labor shortages leads to improved productivity is being established.

Therefore, Dotori views that the abundant order backlog and the diversification of new businesses (FDC, offshore wind) will act as key drivers to further solidify Samsung Heavy Industries' medium- to long-term fundamentals.
