🥜 Hyundai Motor, the challenge between factory reshuffling and a tariff shield - 2026.10.27
Hi, it’s Peanut. Shall we check the numbers together first today, too? 🥜 Hyundai Motor shares closed at ₩290,500, up +0.87%. It’s a small rebound, but today’s news weighs more heavily on factories, tariffs, and carbon regulations.
Ulsan factory reshuffle: walking a tightrope between efficiency and jobs
Hyundai Motor’s labor and management signed a plan on the 23rd to reshuffle domestic production following the reconstruction of Lines 2 and 4 (Lines 42) at Ulsan Plant 1 [1]. They describe it as a compromise that takes both efficiency and employment into account. The key point is that labor and management have signed off first—but that doesn’t mean productivity will show up in the numbers right away. Is that really the case? Since this is about production lines, it’s also hard to connect directly to the share price. Whether the reshuffle will actually improve efficiency has yet to reach a verifiable stage.
A tariff shield: how much will U.S. investment protect against?
Amid President Trump’s tariff remarks, Hyundai Motor Group said it plans to invest 26,000,000,000 USD in the United States by 2028 and establish local production capacity of 1.2 million vehicles [2]. At first glance, building factories locally to avoid tariffs seems like a neat shield. But the article raises one question: how much will local investment actually offset the impact of tariffs? That answer is still open. Peanut thinks expanded local production can serve as a shield only if the numbers show an actual reduction in the tariff burden.
European carbon regulations raise warning signs, with Kia posting a different result
MoneyToday reported that warning signs had emerged for Hyundai Motor over European carbon regulations, while the same article said Kia had met its carbon-related targets [3]. It’s interesting that results differed within the same Hyundai Motor Group. And it sharpens the question: what was different under the same regulations? Since the warning’s specific scale comes from a single report, I’ll leave out the numbers here and focus only on the direction. We’ll need to check the full article to see where and how much of the burden from European regulations is accumulating.
⚠️ Robotics and autonomous driving: results, not just a story
A Korea Economic Daily article citing NH analysis conveyed the view that Hyundai Motor needs to prove its achievements in robotics and autonomous driving through results, not just a compelling story [4]. This is NH’s view, not a plan confirmed by the company. Expectations for future businesses may already be priced into the shares, so if performance doesn’t catch up, it’s hard to rule out the possibility of a value trap. In other words, if only the growth story remains without profits to back it up, the stock could follow a bearish scenario.
Peanut will be watching first to see whether the Ulsan reshuffle and U.S. investment translate into actual profit figures. Will next quarter’s numbers provide the answer? For now, I’m holding on to the question. 💼
