⚙️ The Dawn of the Physical AI Era and Hyundai Mobis Value Chain Analysis - 2026.06.03
Hello. I'm Dotori, the industry reporter at Bultagi.com. The market is quite heated with robot stories these days. A paradigm shift to the 'Physical AI' era, where AI interacts with the physical world beyond simple intelligence, is being structurally observed [2]. Ahead of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's visit to Korea scheduled for the 4th and 5th, a revaluation of the domestic robotics industry is actively underway [5]. As Nvidia pays attention to the combination of Korea's precision machine control know-how and robotics technology, expectations for partnerships to build a physical AI ecosystem are growing [2]. According to systematic analysis, these macroeconomic changes are expected to bring differential benefits to the domestic industry value chain.
⚙️ Physical AI Value Chain Differential Benefit Analysis
From the perspective of the omnidirectional value chain required for robot manufacturing, the beneficiaries can be classified into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd priorities.
- 1st Priority: Core Actuator and Physical AI Solution Providers
Hyundai Mobis and LG Electronics are the top beneficiaries. In particular, Hyundai Mobis received a free transfer of body actuator technology for Boston Dynamics' humanoid robot 'Atlas' last month, and the hand actuator technology transfer is also upcoming shortly [1]. Based on this, it plans to establish a mass production base in the US, start recognizing revenue from 2027, and produce 350,000 actuators, the first production target, by 2028 [1]. This is a volume that can be supplied to 11,000 Atlas units, with expected revenue reaching 525 billion won [1]. Because of this, securities firms are applying the high valuation of global actuator companies to significantly raise Hyundai Mobis's target price from 900,000 won up to 1.2 million won, newly reflecting the business value [1] [2].
- 2nd Priority: Finished Robot and Testbed Platform Companies
Hyundai Motor, Kia, and Doosan Robotics fall into this category. Hyundai Motor Group plans to operate the Robot Meta Plant Application Center (RMAC) in the US during the upcoming third quarter [7]. This place will serve as a physical AI testbed to conduct training and verification and accumulate work data before deploying humanoid robots into actual automobile production processes [7].
- 3rd Priority: Small and Medium Specialized Robot and Parts Companies
Rainbow Robotics, Robotis, and others can expect a trickle-down effect from the expansion of the physical AI ecosystem centered on large corporations [6].
🏭 Supply Chain and Labor Risk Check
While securing future growth engines, risk management at existing manufacturing sites is also a very crucial point. On the 31st of last month, an unfortunate incident occurred where the electronic and chassis production building completely burned down due to a massive fire at the Chennai plant in Tamil Nadu, India [3]. As a result, temporary production disruptions are a concern for the Hyundai Motor Chennai and Talegaon plants in India that receive these parts [3]. Since these plants are core bases that accounted for about 18% of Hyundai Motor's global sales last year, the impact is worrisome, but the company is actively seeking alternative procurement plans by utilizing sufficient inventory from the local dealer network to minimize operational impacts [9].
In addition, the joint dispute countermeasure committee of 14 branches of Hyundai Mobis module and parts companies announced an 8-hour day and night strike on the 4th in protest of the business portfolio restructuring [4]. The cause is the growing job insecurity among subsidiary workers during the restructuring process, such as the recent sale of the lamp business division to France's OP Mobility [8]. The union is demanding job security, joint bargaining guarantees for subsidiaries like Unitus and Motras, and fixed pay increases, urging the direct participation of the parent company, Hyundai Mobis, in negotiations [4]. Since it is centered on expanded executives rather than general union members, there won't be a major production disruption immediately, but conflicts may repeat during additional business restructuring processes such as the sale of the bumper business division in the future [4]. Therefore, it is necessary to calmly monitor the impact these labor risks will have on the speed of the group's business restructuring centered on electrification and future cars.
Dotori views that if Hyundai Mobis stably controls short-term supply chain and labor risks, a structural corporate value revaluation as a core hardware supplier in the physical AI era is valid.
