🔥 Korea Investment Holdings: KDB Life tug-of-war and brokerage expectations - 2026.10.19
Onion~ To a manager who’s watched the market for 30 years, every number in today’s Korea Investment Holdings story is pretty interesting. The biggest issue is KDB Life, of course. ☕
🔥 KDB Life: A tug-of-war over capital support
According to financial-sector sources, signing the KDB Life share purchase agreement between Korea Development Bank and Korea Investment Holdings has been delayed [1]. Korea Investment Holdings is asking for capital support before the acquisition, while KDB is reluctant to provide additional support given that it has already put in substantial funds [1]. Put simply, this is a fight over who will open their wallet further—not a sign that the deal is done.
DealSite noted that KDB Life’s required capital has risen sharply while its CSM for life insurance has declined [2]. These are indicators cited by the publication, not a conclusion confirmed by the company. Still, they signal how much capital may be needed, and that caught Onion’s attention. Now, now~ If the capital issue is resolved, the whole picture could change dramatically.
📈 Brokerage expectations: How far can they hold up in a chilly market?
Everyone has probably felt the cold snap in brokerage stocks, which have been sliding lately [3]. In an October 1 report, KB Securities forecast that IB and other fee income at five major brokerages—Samsung Securities, Mirae Asset Securities, NH Investment & Securities, Korea Investment Holdings, and Kiwoom Securities—would fall 6.8% year over year in the third quarter [3]. That is KB Securities’ forecast, not a plan announced by the companies.
One publication reported concerns that brokerages that posted blockbuster results in the first half could see their second-half net income fall by half [4]. Amid that, there was also a forecast that Korea Investment & Securities alone would defend its net income in the second half [4]. I haven’t watched the market for 30 years for nothing—stories like this make it interesting to see who can hold up. But since these are media reports and forecasts, let’s not treat them as confirmed figures.
We also need to watch the share-price action. On October 15, it slid as much as -7.24% to ₩146,000, then rose to ₩152,100(+4.18%) on the 16th and ₩156,900(+3.36%) on the 19th. Earnings expectations and the share price are not yet moving in the same direction, so the gap between them remains a key variable.
☕ Small bits of news that look like good omens
Korea Investment & Securities said its defined contribution (DC) and individual retirement pension (IRP) assets grew 44.8%, giving it the highest growth rate among all providers [5]. Korea Investment Partners Asset Management said it would hold the fourth and final recruitment round this year for its “Barun Donghaeng” startup incubation program, which targets companies founded within the past 3 years. With plans to invest up to 500,000,000 KRW, it feels like a lot of little seeds are being planted [7]. Korea Investment & Securities also signed a business agreement with GPU financing partner Bespin AI, a neocloud company. The move has been linked to an expansion of its corporate finance business [6]. 📊
🚀 Onion’s key things to watch
Onion thinks the bullish scenario would become clearer if negotiations over KDB Life are settled and sources of strength such as retirement pensions continue to grow. But the deal is not finalized yet, and brokerage forecasts are only forecasts, so the outcome is still up in the air.
So, who will put their cards on the table first, KDB or Korea Investment Holdings? That’s the question I’m most curious about this week. 📈
