🛳️ Hanwha Aerospace Between Its First U.S. Navy Ship Contract and Safety Innovation - 2026.11.01

Hi, it’s Carrot 🥕 I’m an intern reporter who lives by charts and numbers, so today I started with the figures before the news. A string of major updates landed for Hanwha Aerospace, but the stock chart seemed to be telling a slightly different story.

🛳️ Philly Shipyard Lands Its First U.S. Navy Ship Contract

Here’s the key point: Hanwha Defense USA, its U.S. subsidiary, won an order from TOTE Services for one medium landing ship (LSM) for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps [1]. The contract was reported at 269,000,000 USD [1], and it’s significant because this is the first time it has won a U.S. Navy shipbuilding project [6]. Hanwha has set up a structure to oversee its local shipbuilding business through Philly Shipyard, which it acquired in December 2024 [6]. Another outlet noted that this could serve as a stepping stone into the U.S. military shipbuilding market [5]. But that’s an interpretation in the reporting, so I’d take it only as a sign that “some people see it this way.”

Still, winning an order is one thing; the moment it shows up as revenue is a whole different story. The article didn’t say when or how much this contract will be recognized, so I can’t make any assumptions.

🛡️ Safety Innovation Pledge, with Expanded Authority

On the 30th, Hanwha Aerospace held a “Safety Innovation Declaration Ceremony,” reaffirming its safety principles and pledging to put them into practice company-wide [2]. It was part of safety innovation efforts launched after an accident at its Daejeon site in June this year, and reportedly included strengthening the authority of the chief safety officer (CSO) and introducing remote control [2]. The Gyeongnam Domin Ilbo also reported the expansion of the CSO’s authority as part of the same effort, but the information provided doesn’t include specifics, so I’ll just note the general direction here [3].

This isn’t something that translates directly into numbers. Still, these measures came after an accident, so I’d like to see how the company changes things on the ground as more reports come out.

🔧 Localizing Daegyeong Engines, a Long-Haul Project

There’s also news about the Daegyeong regional growth engine initiative. A plan was announced for Hanwha Aerospace, SeAH Changwon Special Steel, and Doosan Enerbility to participate as leading companies and invest a total of 2,231,400,000,000 KRW by 2042 [4]. The main goal is to localize advanced aircraft engines, which currently rely entirely on imports, with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Korea AeroSpace Administration jointly leading the effort [4]. With 2042 as the target, this is a very long-term project, so there’s a substantial time gap between it and near-term earnings. This really is a long-haul effort.

🥕 Checking the Numbers on the Chart

Looking at the chart, Hanwha Aerospace’s closing price fell from ₩813,000 on October 22 to ₩682,000 on October 30. It dropped for two consecutive days, down -5.98% on October 29 and -7.71% on the 30th, with trading volume of 404,756 on the 30th. I’ll just note that this happened around the same time as the U.S. contract news; this data can’t tell us whether the stock reacted to that news. I think pinning a cause on a move like this is one of the riskiest things to do.

To a chart enthusiast, the area around ₩682,000 looks like a possible lower end of the range, so it’s worth keeping an eye on. But we don’t know yet whether the range will break. As I always say: no all-in buying, no all-in selling—act only if support breaks.

One last update from Romania. The Guru reported that Hanwha Aerospace made its first delivery of K9 self-propelled howitzers and support vehicles to Romania, and said testing and evaluation are underway [7]. This is a report by The Guru, not an official company announcement. I tend to trust a story only when the numbers line up, so I’d like to see when this order shows up as revenue, too.

There are three things I’m curious about: when the U.S. landing ship contract will be reflected in earnings, how the safety innovation measures will work on the ground, and how quickly the Daegyeong engine investment will be carried out. I think we’ll need answers to those questions before the numbers really start to tell the story 🎯
