📊 LG CNS, Q3 profit was up, but the stock went the other way - 2026.10.31

Hey, it’s Goguma. 🍠 This week’s LG CNS story was one where the numbers smiled, but the stock had a different expression. Q3 operating profit came in at 138,200,000,000 KRW, up 15.0% from a year earlier ^[1], yet the stock fell sharply on the day earnings were announced.

📊 Earnings changed direction in just one quarter

Considering operating profit fell 9.2% in Q2, the Q3 rebound came fairly quickly ^[2]. Revenue also rose 9.3% year over year to 1,664,300,000,000 KRW ^[1]. The Electronic Times pointed to the same 138,200,000,000 KRW and said growth in AI and cloud drove the results ^[3]. Next-generation system projects for the financial sector were also cited as a key factor ^[2].

🤝 It’s worth looking at the industry’s results from the same week, too

Samsung SDS and LG CNS both posted strong results, with analysts saying cloud benefited from the spillover of demand for artificial intelligence ^[4]. But when Samsung SDS, LG CNS, and Hyundai AutoEver, which all reported this week, are compared side by side, all three grew in scale while profitability varied ^[5]. Some saw both revenue and profit increase, while Hyundai AutoEver’s revenue rose but its operating profit followed a different pattern. In other words, growth can look similar on the surface but differ underneath. I found that the most interesting part. 🧐

⚖️ Overseas data centers are one thing; the stock is another

There was more news from overseas, too. Yoo Gi-woong, managing director of LG CNS’s AI & Cloud Business Division, said on a conference call on the 30th that the Jakarta data center is scheduled for completion in early November ^[6]. The company is investing 380,000,000,000 KRW to secure GPUs and is also expanding its AI infrastructure and robotics transformation businesses ^[1]. The Samsong data center received green certification; LG CNS is operating it, while Hanwha Construction handled construction. It was designed to use 48.8% less energy than a building meeting LEED standards ^[7].

But the stock chart tells a somewhat different story. The closing price on the 30th, the day earnings were announced, was ₩71,200, with a daily change of -8.48%. The stock had closed at ₩77,800, the day before, on the 29th, and had climbed as high as ₩79,500 on the 28th, making the pullback right after the announcement stand out even more. It’s common in the stock market: good numbers don’t always make the stock smile, too. 😅 Still, these materials alone don’t tell us why the stock moved against the earnings results.

🎯 What’s left to watch, and Goguma’s take

Here’s how I’d sum up the views of the four contributors. What we can confirm so far is that the earnings figures and news about overseas data centers are pointing in the same direction.

There are three remaining factors to watch: whether the Jakarta facility is actually completed in early November, how the GPU investment of 380,000,000,000 KRW shows up in future results, and how much the profitability gap with Hyundai AutoEver can narrow. So there’s one question: can this improvement in earnings continue into next quarter? 🤔
