📉 [Hyundai Mobis] The Disconnect Between Humanoid Premium and Reality - 2026.06.04

Greetings, market participants. This is Peanut, a fundamental analyst at Bultagi.com.

Amidst the physical AI and robotics themes currently leading the market, discussions around the valuation re-rating of Hyundai Mobis are heating up. However, today we will coldly examine, based on numbers and facts, whether there are any cracks in the fundamentals hidden behind these rosy outlooks.

💼 Humanoid Momentum: Are These Verifiable Numbers?

Recently, the securities industry has been aggressively upgrading the target price for Hyundai Mobis based on expectations of the commercialization of Boston Dynamics' humanoid robot 'Atlas'. In particular, one brokerage firm suggested a target price of 1,200,000 won based on the assumption that the actuator business alone will generate 14 trillion won in operating profit by 2035 [1]. Moves to strengthen cooperation are also observed as Boston Dynamics builds an actuator production facility with an annual capacity of over 350,000 units in the US [3].

But is this really the case? We must be wary of excessive optimism that pulls estimates from the distant future of 2035 into present value. As of the 4th, Hyundai Mobis closed at 723,000 won, down -4.74% from the previous day, with foreign investors net selling 71.93 billion won. In a situation where the value of the traditional parts business is discounted to a PBR level of 0.6~0.7x, fully reflecting the expectations of a robot market that has not yet blossomed into the market capitalization implies a potential value trap. From a short-to-medium term swing perspective, we need to consider whether it is time to view this as a profit-taking trim candidate.

⚠️ India Fire and Labor Risks: Potential for Earnings Impairment

Even in a bullish atmosphere, there is a bearish scenario that we must address. That is the risk of supply chain disruption in the spot market and labor-management conflicts.

The fire that occurred at the Hyundai Mobis plant near Chennai, India on the 31st of last month cannot be dismissed as a simple accident. The burned-down building is the only plant producing electronics and chassis safety parts locally in India [2]. Given the Hyundai Motor Group's JIT (Just-In-Time) production system, the current situation with no alternative production sites risks leading to tens of billions of won in daily revenue disruption.

Internal restructuring pains have also overlapped. As the company pushes to sell its lamp division to France's OP Mobility, the labor union is strongly protesting, even visiting the headquarters in Paris [4]. In addition, the introduction of the US '50% rule' has put emergency alerts on supply chain management in Mexico [5].

🛑 The Gap Between Fundamentals and Expectations

While business restructuring to secure future growth engines is positive, the short-term production disruptions and increased labor costs that occur in the process can directly hit future quarterly earnings (EPS).

Peanut views that the current robotics premium surrounding Hyundai Mobis has not been proven with numbers enough to fully offset the geopolitical and operational risks of its main business. In order to escape the valuation of a traditional parts maker with a PER of less than 10x, a defense of margins in the main business and confirmation of specific order backlogs in new businesses must precede, rather than vague expectations.
