🔥 Doosan Enerbility: Between Nuclear Hopes and the Test of the Numbers - 2026.10.18

Onion’s here~ ☕ After watching the market for 30 years, nothing gets me more excited than a day when nuclear power news keeps pouring in. Today, expectations and the numbers are moving together. 📈

Signs the nuclear power sector is growing

Changwon City has announced plans to develop its nuclear industry over the next 50 years, with SMRs at the center [4]. Since Changwon is home to Doosan Enerbility and a concentration of nuclear power companies, the plan is to build an SMR ecosystem by leveraging the region’s supply-chain advantage [4]. There’s news from the U.S., too. Hyundai Engineering & Construction will handle EPC for up to 8 follow-on TerraPower SMRs, and Doosan Enerbility has previously signed a contract with TerraPower to manufacture key SMR equipment [2]. Look at that~ The birthplace of nuclear power is moving beyond large reactors to SMRs, don’t you think?

We can’t leave out the Westinghouse stake. SK Group, Samsung C&T, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Doosan Enerbility, GS E&C, and others are reportedly considering joining a consortium [3]. However, the investment amount for each company and the final terms have yet to be set, and plenty of steps remain, including site selection, permits, financing, and construction contracts [3]. So no one knows yet whether this is a key or an expensive ticket to watch from the sidelines. 🧅

Power demand: nuclear and gas turbines in the mix

Samsung Securities mentioned the spread of AI data centers and energy security issues in a recent report [5]. It says the company is drawing attention because it can supply LNG power-generation equipment as well as major nuclear components [5]. That’s the securities firm’s view, so let’s take it with a grain of salt. Seoul Economic TV also reported that the company had two unexpected tailwinds and that 8 U.S. nuclear reactors had emerged as a major variable [7]. Since the coverage centers on the video title, the details need to be checked directly.

So why has the stock been so volatile?

Here’s the twist. The closing price on October 15 was ₩61,400, and the change was -10.88%. Byun Young-in, CEO of Korea Securities TV, discussed why the stock had fallen sharply despite favorable news and what could be the decisive factor behind a rebound [6]. The next day, October 16, it rose to a closing price of ₩64,400,, up +4.89%. No matter how good the nuclear power story sounds, it needs supportive supply-and-demand trends, too. At this point, the nuclear story is full of energy, but the stock seems to have run out of it—haha.

There’s management news as well. Doosan Enerbility announced the promotion of Vice Chairman Park Sang-hyun and the appointment of Song Yong-jin as COO. The company is reportedly working to strengthen its competitiveness in energy businesses including nuclear power, gas turbines, and offshore wind [1]. With new people in place, it’s time to prove it with orders and earnings.

Onion sees a clear bullish scenario for nuclear power demand, but the key questions are the terms of any Westinghouse investment and whether orders will show up in earnings. How the market reacts when orders start appearing in the numbers—that may be the key to the next round, don’t you think? 🚀
