💼 Peanut's Fundamental Check: Hyundai Motor Strike Risks and Value Trap Warnings - 2026.06.14
Hello, Hyundai Motor shareholders and fans who love fundamentals. I'm Peanut, a conservative analyst in my late 30s from an IB background who sees the world through numbers. Today is June 14, 2026, and we are at a point of quite high market volatility. On Friday the 12th, Hyundai Motor closed at 607,000 KRW (+1.68%), with a trading volume of 1,501,032 shares. Foreigners net bought 51.17 billion KRW, but institutions net sold 40.46 billion KRW. With bullish momentum and bearish risks mixed together, we need to carefully check if this might be a value trap.
💼 Breaking 11.8% US Market Share, Is It Truly Sustainable?
From January to April this year, Hyundai and Kia's sales in the US market reached 589,936 units, growing 1.3% compared to the same period last year [1]. The market share hit 11.8%, ranking 4th after GM, Toyota, and Ford [2]. While all competitors experienced negative growth, they managed to grow alone, and the secret is definitely hybrids [1]. Hybrid sales surged 53.2% in the first quarter, showing solid earnings defense [2].
But a question arises here. Will this growth trend be sustainable through the second half of the year. While hybrids are becoming an alternative amidst the slowdown in EV demand, EV price competition is getting very fierce, with Tesla's Model Y taking the number one spot in domestic sales last month [9]. Hyundai also stepped up its defense by lowering the price of the '2027 Ioniq 5' [8], but it seems difficult to completely erase concerns about margin damage.
⚠️ Union Strike Procedures, Value Trap Vigilance Needed
Short to medium-term swing. Presenting a bearish scenario even in a bullish atmosphere is my trademark. There is a risk we must point out. That is labor-management conflict. On the 12th, the Hyundai Motor union declared a breakdown in the 11th negotiation and entered strike procedures [3]. The union is demanding an increase in base pay along with a performance bonus equal to 30% of last year's net profit [4]. A vote by all union members is scheduled for the 25th [3], and if a strike becomes a reality and production is disrupted, it could pour cold water on investor sentiment.
Even if valuations seem to have entered an attractive zone based on PER and PBR metrics, considering the impact a strike risk could have on earnings, I think careful vigilance is needed, such as approaching it as a candidate for profit-taking trimming in the short term.
📉 Physical AI and Le Mans 24h, Are They Verifiable Catalysts?
There is also quite a bit of interesting news that could lead to an expansion of future EV/EBITDA multiples. The Genesis brand has thrown its hat into the ring for the first time in the hypercar class of the 'Le Mans 24 Hours', which has a 100-year history [6]. Competing in the race held at the Circuit de la Sarthe in France on the 13th, they are performing well, making it into the hyperpole top 10 [7].
Also, the news of investing about 9 trillion KRW in Saemangeum to build an AI data center and robot manufacturing cluster is drawing market attention [5]. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also expressed interest in this project, so expectations are naturally growing [5]. Boston Dynamics' humanoid robot Atlas is advancing its control technology through football training, and the blueprint to establish an annual mass production system of 30,000 units by 2030 is also positive [12]. They are also actively using these robots for this World Cup marketing [11].
🛑 Time for Cold Fundamentals
In overseas markets, leverage products based on Hyundai Motor have been listed in Hong Kong, and a launch in the US market is also being pushed [10]. This means funds seeking volatility are flocking in.
However, a fundamental investor must remain cold-headed. While the strong US market and robotics momentum guarantee long-term growth, the immediate union strike risk and intensifying global EV price competition carry the danger of downward revisions to earnings estimates. I want to ask if it's verifiable that the current positive news is not already fully priced in. Peanut believes that rather than aggressively expanding positions at the current point, it is reasonable to approach conservatively while checking whether the strike risk is resolved.
Wrap up the weekend well, everyone, and let's respond cool-headedly to the market next week.
