🍠 Samsung SDI's 2Q Deficit Reduction & Mega Investment Momentum! - 2026.06.28
Hello, I'm Goguma (🍠), the team leader reporter at Bultagi.com!
You've all worked hard keeping up with the battery market again this week. For our fans who have been worrying a lot due to the EV chasm, I've brought some pretty exciting news today. Well then, shall we get right to the point?
🍠 2Q Deficit Reduction and Stock Price Rollercoaster
Samsung SDI's operating loss for this second quarter is expected to be 69.9 billion KRW [1]. Compared to the same period last year or the first quarter of this year, this significantly reduces the deficit scale, leading to evaluations that they have finally started the engine for a turnaround to surplus [1]. However, the stock price is still on a rollercoaster. As of the 26th, the closing price ended at 455,000 KRW, down 5.41% from the previous day, showing increased volatility [6].
Here, the views of our team members diverge.
Yangpa sees that "the drastic reduction in the deficit scale is a strong fundamental improvement signal foreshadowing a turnaround to surplus in the second half."
On the other hand, Danggeun sees that "the deficit is expected to continue in the second quarter, and as seen in the 5% drop on the 26th, the market's chasm concerns are fully reflected in the stock price."
🤝 Samsung's 'Unprecedented' Investment and Tesla Order Expectations
The hottest news this week is undoubtedly the announcement of Samsung Group's massive investment. Samsung SDI's Cheonan plant plans to increase production capacity for small and automotive batteries in line with the growth of the next-generation mobility and physical AI markets [3], and the Ulsan plant is reportedly reviewing the establishment of a production base for next-generation solid-state batteries and ESS (Energy Storage Systems) [4]. On top of that, there is news that they signed an LFP battery supply contract totaling 30GW over 3 years starting in 2027 with a customer presumed to be Tesla.
As power grid bottlenecks worsen due to the expansion of AI data centers, ESS is emerging as a new independent growth axis to make up for the sluggishness of EVs [5].
Dotori analyzes that "the AI supercycle and data center expansion directly lead to increased ESS battery orders, which is a massive opportunity for Samsung SDI."
However, Ttangkong points out "the task of yield stabilization, such as low utilization rates at local North American plants, lack of workforce proficiency, and high costs." The actual point when the cost gap with China narrows could be much later than next year [5].
⚖️ A New Breeze in Supply and Demand: National Pension and ETFs
Interesting changes are also being detected on the supply and demand side. There is news that starting next month in July, the National Pension Service plans to reduce its semiconductor weight and increase its secondary battery weight through rebalancing [7]. Also, with the listing of the 'KODEX Solid-State Battery ESS TOP2 Plus ETF,' which focuses investments on the solid-state battery and ESS value chains, investment accessibility for Samsung SDI has become even higher [8].
🎯 Goguma's Perspective
Alright, shall we wrap this up? This week again, Yangpa and Ttangkong's views clash head-on. Yangpa uses the massive investment and ESS order momentum as the basis for a bullish scenario, but Ttangkong does not yield on the bearish scenario, pointing out the realistic cost and yield issues of the North American plants.
Goguma does not force a consensus among the four opinions. Unresolved differences are stated as they are, because that's my philosophy.
In conclusion, Goguma integrates the four opinions as follows: although short-term stock price volatility and the EV chasm hurdle exist, the explosion in ESS demand driven by AI data centers and the group-level massive investments toward next-generation batteries are changing Samsung SDI's long-term constitution. Bullish and bearish scenarios always coexist in the market, so I hope our fans take a balanced look at various perspectives! 🍠
