💼 Boston Dynamics Momentum and Yellow Envelope Law Risks, Value Trap Vigilance Needed - 2026.06.18

Hello, Hyundai Motor shareholders. This is Peanut, checking the fundamentals and valuation.

Today (18th), Hyundai Motor's closing price fell 2.27% from the previous day to 604,000 won. The trading volume was 842,086 shares, and foreigners and institutions net sold 46.1 billion won and 92.4 billion won, respectively, showing a dual-selling trend. The stock price, which had risen to the 640,000 won range, is undergoing a correction again. Can this price range really be justified? Let's look at it coldly based on verifiable fundamentals. From a short-to-mid term swing perspective, presenting a bearish scenario even in a bullish atmosphere is my trademark.

💼 Strong Hybrid Sales and Robot Momentum, Grounds for Stock Price Rise?

The strong performance in the US market is certainly a notable point.

  • From January to April this year, Hyundai and Kia's US market share rose to 11.8%, narrowing the gap with 3rd place Ford to 0.4% points [1].
  • This is thanks to sales of hybrid (HEV) models like Tucson and Sportage increasing by 53.2% compared to the same period last year [1].
  • In addition, they are diversifying their electrification strategy by pursuing the development of EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) to increase EV driving range [5].

Future mobility value is also being re-evaluated. Hanwha Investment & Securities views Hyundai's Q2 sales volume as sluggish at around 1.001 million units, but raised its target price by 15% reflecting expectations for the commercialization of the robot business [2]. The possibility of a Boston Dynamics IPO in 2028 and the commercialization of the humanoid 'Atlas' are being discussed as core drivers of value-up [8].

But, is this everything? Let's pause and think if there is a possibility of a value trap hidden behind the rosy outlook.

⚠️ Subcontractor Union Risks and Domestic Share Decline, Checking Bearish Scenarios

Variables that pose a risk of damaging fundamentals are lurking everywhere, so vigilance is needed.

"The Central Labor Relations Commission recognized Hyundai Motor as the 'real boss' in response to negotiation demands raised by 10 Hyundai Motor subcontractor unions." [3]

Following the enforcement of the Yellow Envelope Law, a ruling was made that Hyundai Motor, the principal contractor, must also respond to collective bargaining for indirect support tasks such as catering and security, not just direct production processes. Considering the scale of Hyundai's partner companies, there is a risk of being exposed to year-round labor-management conflicts and strike risks. This is a critical issue that can directly lead to increased fixed costs and damaged margin rates.

Additionally, the weakening position in the domestic market is a painful point. From January to May this year, Hyundai's new car purchase share among consumers in their 20s and 30s plummeted by 7.9% points year-on-year to 30.3% [4]. On the other hand, Tesla boosted its share to 14.3% led by the Model Y [4]. Although they are aiming for a turnaround with the release of the 8th generation all-new Avante model in early August [6], it seems difficult to recover market share without fundamental brand image renewal and proving autonomous driving technology.

🛑 Profit-Taking Trim Candidate or Low-Dipping Opportunity?

Foreigners have net sold 144.2 billion won worth of Hyundai Motor this month alone, revealing a void in supply and demand [7]. Can the narrative of a robotics premium cover the reality of a Q2 earnings slowdown and labor risks?

Peanut views that at the current point, Hyundai Motor's valuation is pre-reflecting future robot momentum, while not sufficiently discounting the upcoming labor conflict costs and domestic share decline risks. Therefore, rather than uncritical optimism, it may be reasonable to approach conservatively, considering it as a profit-taking trim candidate in preparation for short-term volatility expansion. Let's maintain a cautious attitude until fundamental-based numbers are confirmed.
