📊 Hyundai Motor, Caught Between a Halted Line and Falling Sales - 2026.11.03
Hey, it’s Carrot 🥕 Hyundai Motor’s story is pretty noisy today. Let’s start with the Genesis line in Ulsan.
The line stopped, then started again—what’s going on?
It began in the trim section of Line 1 at Plant 5 in Ulsan [6]. The company and union clashed when the company tried to put a G80 hybrid test vehicle on the line. The point of contention is reportedly a collective bargaining agreement clause requiring labor-management consultations 90 days before new models go into mass production [1]. According to reports, the company announced that it would apply a no-work, no-pay policy to around 800 employees in the Genesis trim section, citing an “illegal strike” [6]. That’s the company’s announcement; these articles don’t provide much detail on the union’s position.
But news of a restart also came out. One report says the line, which had stopped the previous morning, started running again around 5 p.m. on November 3 [2]. Another report, however, says it was still shut down for a second day [1], so the timing of the two reports doesn’t line up. I can’t confirm this part for sure, so I’ll leave it as “conflicting reports.”
Sales have been declining for 13 months straight
The sales figures make things even tougher. Sales have fallen for 13 consecutive months, and during that stretch, testing of the G80 hybrid also came to a halt [3]. Hyundai reportedly pushed for a man-hour agreement to mass-produce the G80 hybrid and the refreshed G90, but faced opposition from union representatives on the factory floor [3]. Man-hours basically means how many people work on making a car and for how long. That tug-of-war is the key issue.
CEO Muñoz has weighed in, too. In an exclusive interview with MoneyToday, he diagnosed the reasons for the slump and called it “one of the most difficult periods imaginable” [4]. He did acknowledge the challenges, but the article doesn’t clarify what specific steps the company will take. And this is all happening alongside talk of a sales recovery. At a parliamentary audit, voices called for including a tax credit for electric vehicles produced domestically, and one article noted that attention is on whether this could help Hyundai Motor’s sales recover [5]. The policy is still under discussion, so it shouldn’t be read as a result that’s already been decided.
What the chart is telling us
📊 Let’s look at the stock figures, too. The closing price on October 30 was ₩278,500(-4.62%), and it bounced back to ₩286,500(+2.87%) on November 2. Then the November 3 close was ₩277,000(-3.48%), with trading volume at 397,268. The area around the November 2 low of ₩270,500 is the lower boundary of the trading range that stands out most to me right now. The key thing to watch is whether it holds. So rather than calling the direction of the price, Carrot thinks it makes more sense to watch whether it can hold this zone. I’ll lay down one trademark rule, too: no going all-in on buying, no going all-in on selling, and act only if support breaks. On a day like today, that principle is a real pick.
Questions that remain
Will the line keep running, when will the man-hour agreement be finalized, and will the downward sales trend finally break? Those are the three open variables right now. If sales trends and the line’s restart status come together, I think earnings will be back in the conversation. What do you think? ✨
