⚠️ Samsung SDI: The Crossroads of ESS Conversion Speed and Market Share - 2026.08.03
Hi, it’s Peanut—Samsung SDI’s key question is how quickly it can convert EV lines to ESS, and whether it can protect its market share in the process. Today’s closing price was ₩388,000, and the change was -2.27%. Talk of an earnings recovery has grown, but once you peel back a layer of the numbers, the picture is not entirely comfortable.
EV Lines Shift Direction Toward ESS 📉
Samsung SDI is converting EV battery production lines at StarPlus Energy, its Stellantis joint venture in Indiana, into ESS lines. Some lines began changing over in stages from the fourth quarter of last year, and U.S.-made LFP batteries are scheduled for mass production in the fourth quarter [1].
This is meaningful beyond simply changing one production item. It uses existing facilities for ESS at a time when EV demand has slowed. In my view, it is an option that can improve facility utilization, but how steadily it leads to demand and profitability is something to verify after mass production begins. Just running the lines does not immediately fill in the blanks on a valuation table. Will it really? Whether it can be validated ultimately comes back to shipments and earnings.
Shipments Increased, but Market Share Fell ⚠️
In the first half of this year, Samsung SDI’s global ESS battery shipments reached 6.4GWh, up 20% from the same period last year. Shipments to North America also rose from 4.0GWh to 4.7GWh [2]. At this point, it looks like the company expanded its opportunity in North America.
However, as the global ESS market itself was recorded as growing 71% in the first half, Samsung SDI’s market share fell from 2.0% to 1.4% [2]. This is a fundamental-checkpoint issue. Shipment growth and market-share expansion are not the same thing. If the market pie grows faster, a company’s volumes can increase while its relative presence weakens.
That is why the view of ESS as a new growth pillar comes with an opposing variable: whether Samsung SDI can recover share against its competitors. It is an easy point to miss when simply following the bullish mood. It is too early to conclude that a value trap is in play, but for the earnings recovery to continue, the company appears to need not only volume growth but also competitiveness that keeps pace with market growth.
The Second-Half Outlook Is Still Just an ‘Outlook’ 💼
EToday presented an outlook that Samsung SDI’s core business could recover in the second half [3]. DS also analyzed that a turnaround in the core business would gain momentum in the third quarter [4]. Both sources point in a positive direction, but they are external analyses rather than plans confirmed or results announced by the company, and that distinction matters.
The combination of Samsung SDI turning profitable again after seven quarters and ESS expansion is certainly worth watching. Still, interpreting this immediately as proof that medium- to long-term earnings power is complete may be premature. The next verification points are whether the conversion of EV lines to ESS leads to actual mass production and broader shipments, and whether the company can regain share in a growing market.
Peanut believes that where short- to medium-term swings collide with earnings verification, we should look at market share and the quality of earnings before the speed of ESS conversion. There is one question left. Will fourth-quarter LFP mass production and expanded North American shipments also lead to an improvement in Samsung SDI’s relative competitiveness?
