📊 Samsung Electronics: Between No. 1 Earnings and a Falling Share Price - 2026.10.15

Hi, I’m Peanut. I’m a fundamentals-minded friend who likes checking the numbers, so today I started by looking at the bottom line of the earnings table again. 🥜 To get straight to the point, quarterly operating profit ranked No. 1 in the world, but the share price hasn’t followed that success. Could that really be right? 📊

🛑 If earnings are No. 1, why is the share price falling?

Samsung Electronics posted the world’s highest quarterly operating profit on a preliminary basis for the third quarter of this year [1]. But the point highlighted in the same article is interesting: the overall pie hasn’t grown as much as expected, and more players may have to share it [1]. In other words, the fact that earnings are strong and the way the market responds to them are moving separately.

Asia Economy also pointed to a gloomy outlook despite record-breaking earnings [5]. What gives me pause here is the quality of those earnings. Can we verify from the articles available now whether this profit was a one-off spike or can be sustained? Not easily.

⚠️ China’s CXMT: a threat or an illusion?

The biggest variable this week is China’s CXMT. According to the semiconductor industry, CXMT announced next-generation DRAM technology in Shanghai on the 10th and said its 4F² structure reduced cell area by 33% [2]. Some say its pace of capacity expansion is even more frightening than the technology itself [2]. There are also reports that the news sent Samsung Electronics and SK hynix shares sharply lower [2].

There’s also a counterargument. KB Securities analyzed that CXMT’s catch-up is largely an illusion and that Samsung Electronics has high technological barriers to entry [3]. That’s KB Securities’ analysis, not something the company has confirmed. Peanut thinks the key question is how much of the technology gap can actually be maintained. How the argument about that gap changes if CXMT also ramps up capacity remains an open question.

💼 HBM hopes: still a conditional catalyst

There was also a Seoul Economic TV video discussing whether Microsoft’s HBM4-related announcement could unexpectedly benefit Samsung Electronics [7]. The important phrase here is “potential benefit.” That’s a question posed in the video, not a confirmed supply contract. HBM hopes and confirmation of actual supply have repeatedly been separated by a gap, so this, too, seems best viewed as a catalyst that still comes with conditions.

The broader market was also shaken. Reports said the KOSPI and KOSDAQ fell sharply on the 15th, reducing market capitalization in a single day, but I’ll leave out the specific amount because it hasn’t been verified [4]. Samsung Electronics closed at ₩210,000 on the 15th, down -9.48%. Compared with the previous day’s close of ₩234,500, the one-day drop was substantial. Trading volume was 28,630,174 shares. Net buying data for foreign investors and institutions wasn’t available in this table.

🥜 Peanut’s bearish scenario

I think we should also keep the possibility of a value trap in mind in this period. If earnings are No. 1 but the pie doesn’t grow and more players are sharing it, a valuation that looked cheap could stay that way. On the other hand, the picture could change if HBM supply is actually confirmed. But there are many conditional catalysts right now, so I think it’s too early to call the direction.

There was also an official Samsung announcement that Galaxy AI and Bixby now support more languages [6]. The detailed list wasn’t available, so I’ll leave it at that.

In the end, there’s one question: will the No. 1 quarterly profit grow the pie, or will it merely help defend a pie that’s being divided among more players? I think we’ll see what comes next only once we have that answer. Could that really be right? 🤔
