💼 [Samsung Electro-Mechanics] The Shadow Behind the 1.97M Won Breakthrough: ETF Rebalancing and NPS Profit-Taking 🛑 - 2026.06.10

Hello, shareholders. I'm Peanut, digging into the gaps between fundamentals and valuation.

Yesterday (the 9th), amid the KOSPI's 8% sharp rebound, Samsung Electro-Mechanics' closing price reached 1,970,000 won (+18.39%), overtaking Hyundai Motor to rank 4th in market capitalization [3]. In the securities sector, based on the benefits of the AI paradigm and potential MLCC price hikes, Daishin Securities raised its target price to 2.4 million won [4], and iM Securities to 2.3 million won [5]. In particular, silicon capacitors, which have a low investment burden as a fabless operation and high profitability, are being pointed out as a new growth engine, strengthening the logic for valuation re-rating [4].

But just because the stock price spiked in the short term, does the intrinsic value of the fundamentals also jump 18% overnight. Looking at today's (the 10th) closing price of 1,803,000 won (-8.48%) for Samsung Electro-Mechanics as the KOSPI fell back below 7800 due to foreign and institutional selling [8], it's time to coldly assess the risks behind the bull market.

⚠️ Exceeded ETF Weights and Mechanical Selling Risk

The area requiring the most vigilance is the supply and demand entanglement. As the stock price soared this year, the weight of Samsung Electro-Mechanics in some ETFs, such as 'KODEX AI Semiconductor TOP2 Plus', exceeded the 30% upper limit, soaring to 38.49% [1]. According to regulations, the weight must be lowered to 25% or below through regular rebalancing around the 15th, two business days after tomorrow's (the 11th) futures and options expiration date [1]. The potential selling volume pouring out from 7 products is estimated at around 990 billion won, and there is a risk that the mechanical selling of passive funds will act as downward pressure on the stock price [1].

💼 Smart Money's Profit-Taking Movements

We also need to check the flow of institutions and pension funds. The National Pension Service (NPS) has already begun profit-taking, reducing its stake in Samsung Electro-Mechanics from 10.30% to 9.74% through a disclosure this month [2]. This is interpreted as a portfolio adjustment for valuation profit management following the stock's surge of over 600% this year [2]. There are also signs that institutional investors, such as investment trusts, have been conducting preemptive selling ahead of the ETF rebalancing since late May [1]. Although they call it a valuation re-rating phase, the fact that major institutions are reducing their weight suggests the possibility of a short-term value trap.

📉 Supply Chain Variables and Intensifying Tech Competition

Can the noise on the fundamental side be verified. The strong earthquake in the Philippines caused MLCC production disruption issues at a major production base [6], and in the AI semiconductor substrate (FC-BGA) sector, analysis shows that due to Samsung Electro-Mechanics' limits in expanding production, opportunities are opening up for latecomers like LG Innotek, which is investing 2 trillion won.

Competition in the glass substrate market, considered the next-generation packaging, is also fierce. Samsung Electro-Mechanics has built a pilot line at its Sejong plant and aims for mass production after 2027 [7], but Chinese companies like WG Tech implementing TGV (Through Glass Via) micro-machining processes to supply samples, and BOE signing an MOU with Corning, are fiercely chasing and narrowing the gap with Korea in core processes, so we cannot be complacent [7].

"Behind flashy target price upgrade reports, the shadow of mechanical selling volume and profit-taking always exists."

Peanut views that while current Samsung Electro-Mechanics has indeed gained AI momentum, it has entered a typical profit-taking trim candidate zone from a short-to-mid-term swing perspective, where short-term supply and demand burdens and supply chain risks intersect. Even if long-term growth remains valid, it seems difficult to hastily justify valuation premiums like EV/EBITDA before confirming the digestion process of the trillion-won rebalancing volume next week.
