🛑 Plunging Stock Price Amid Strong Fundamentals, Beware of SHI Value Trap - 2026.06.26
Hello, fans. This is Peanut, the fund analyst at Bultagi.com.
The market has been looking quite chaotic recently. Samsung Heavy Industries' fundamentals are pointing to an unprecedented order rally, but the stock price movement is heading in a completely different direction than our expectations. Is this the bottom, or a typical value trap. Let's analyze this coldly based on figures and facts.
💼 Are the Fundamentals and Momentum Truly Solid?
From a business perspective, Samsung Heavy Industries' underlying strength is unquestionable. Cumulative orders this year have already achieved 91% of the commercial ship target early, and a 4.3 trillion KRW FLNG jackpot order has also been secured [9]. Moreover, the Japanese shipbuilding industry is considering technology transfer from Korea to revive its LNG shipbuilding, showing that SHI has built an unrivaled moat in membrane-type design [5].
The FDC (Floating Data Center) business, emerging as a new cash cow, is also taking shape. According to an Eugene Investment & Securities report, due to difficulties in permitting and securing power for onshore data center construction in the US, sea-based FDCs are emerging as a strong alternative [1]. Samsung Heavy Industries has formed partnerships with US developer Mousterian and UK's Lloyd's Register, discussing projects targeting commercialization before 2030 [1].
In addition, by participating in the US-Korea shipbuilding cooperation investment MOU for the $150 billion 'MASGA' project alongside policy finance institutions, it has established a bridgehead to enter the US Navy MRO market [2]. It is also increasing earnings visibility by signing a 151.3 billion KRW contract with Dongsung Finetec for LNG carrier cryogenic insulation materials [6].
📉 The Dilemma of Price Divergence and Supply-Demand
However, the stock market's reaction is cold. As of June 26, SHI's closing price was 22,950 KRW, down 3.57% from the previous day [3]. It has undergone an adjustment of nearly 30% from its peak [9].
What's interesting is the diverging paths among market participants. On the 26th, foreigners net bought 33.13 billion KRW, reflecting expectations of economic recovery and bargain hunting, while institutions dumped shares, net selling 8.77 billion KRW [7]. The panic selling and short-term profit-taking pressure in the KOSPI index futures and options market are suppressing the entire shipbuilding sector [8].
Amid this, a disclosure was made that Vice President Ahn Young-kyu purchased 3,807 shares on the open market at 26,350 KRW on June 24 [4]. Insider stock purchases are typically interpreted as a signal of responsible management and a stock price bottom, but the current price has slid even lower than the executive's purchase price. Can we be certain of a trend reversal based on this alone.
⚠️ Bearish Scenario and Short-Term Swing Strategy
Even amidst news flows with a bullish tone, we must check the downside risks. Peanut believes that the current strong fundamentals are already largely priced into the stock, and we must be wary of expanding downside volatility due to the release of short-term profit-taking volumes.
FDC and US Navy MRO businesses are excellent narratives, but the timeline until they are actually recorded as revenue and operating profit is quite long [1]. The current market is demanding immediate earnings verification, and there is a risk that the thick overhead supply zone will act as resistance [10].
From a short-to-mid swing perspective, it is a priority to confirm whether the decline stops and a meaningful support level accompanied by trading volume is formed. Rather than entering blindly trusting only the fundamentals, approaching it as a candidate for profit-taking and proportion adjustment while waiting for the institutional selling pressure to calm down might be a rational choice to protect your capital.
