📉 TSMC Enters Top 9 in Market Cap, Value Trap Warning Hidden Behind the Flashy Party - 2026.06.09
Hello, fans. This is Peanut from Bultagi.com. It seems everyone is enjoying the party, intoxicated by the AI boom, but I wonder if anyone has checked the location of the emergency exits before dancing. The market's expectations are immense, but can the numbers we are seeing truly guarantee future profitability. Today, I want to calmly examine the fundamental risks hidden behind the flashy earnings.
💼 Entering the Global Top 9 in Market Cap, is the Valuation Justified
According to a PwC report, TSMC's market capitalization reached $1.427 trillion as of March 31 this year, surging 101% year-on-year to rank 9th globally [1]. Q1 profit also jumped 58% [1], and the Q1 pure-play foundry market share recorded an overwhelming 1st place at 73%, up slightly from 72% in the previous quarter [2]. Chairman C.C. Wei also expressed confidence at the annual shareholder meeting that TSMC's monopoly position will remain firmly intact despite competitors' pursuits [8].
Recently, the combination of TSMC's contract manufacturing capabilities and Korean memory was confirmed in the production process of Nvidia's VERA chips, showing a very solid position within the AI factory ecosystem [7]. The news that a Senior Vice President (SVP) increased his holdings through the Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP) and Long-Term Incentive (LTI) trust likely acted as a positive signal for investors as well.
Looking only at the numbers and circumstances, it seems perfect. But will these flashy indicators guarantee sustainable growth. There are also points that Taiwan's heavy reliance on a single industry could be vulnerable to semiconductor cycle fluctuations [1]. Caution is needed regarding the possibility that the market's blind optimism could lead to a value trap. I want to ask if the current valuation premium can be fully justified and calmly verified.
⚠️ The Double Hardship of Geopolitical Risks and Intensifying Competition
Recently, US senators sent a letter to the Commerce Department urging them to block the loophole where Chinese companies use overseas subsidiaries to custom-manufacture advanced AI chips at TSMC [3]. News that the Taiwanese government is also considering tougher regulations on AI chip exports to China caused the stock price to slip in the premarket [4]. This suggests that the geopolitical risks TSMC faces in the global supply chain run the risk of leading to an actual hit in revenue.
Furthermore, there is news that Intel is producing 3 million Google TPUs [5]. Changes in the competitive landscape of the AI semiconductor market could become an important variable for future client order trends [5]. This means there is a risk that cracks will slowly form in TSMC's monopolistic foundry position. From a short-to-mid term swing perspective, such geopolitical pressure and competitors' infiltration are major variables that could cause direct damage to the fundamentals. Can the current moat really last forever.
📉 Checking the Bearish Scenario Amidst the Bullish Atmosphere
Looking at recent stock price volatility, the market's anxiety is quite deeply embedded. After suffering a -6.69% drop to close at 415 on June 5, the Taiwan stock market plunged more than 2,600 points on June 8, experiencing record intraday volatility. Fortunately, it managed to rebound, closing at 426 (+2.80%) on the 8th and 427 (+0.19%) on the 9th, but it's too early to be relieved. The macroeconomic environment has plenty of risks to significantly shrink investment sentiment, as concerns over prolonged high interest rates could stimulate risks for marginal companies and fuel foreign investors' capital outflow [6].
Peanut believes that even in the current AI boom, if geopolitical variables and macro instability intertwine, some positions should be considered as profit-taking trim candidates. Even in a bullish atmosphere, we must touch upon this bearish scenario at least once. Now is the time for a cautious approach to hedge risks based on fundamentals and numbers rather than vague expectations.
