🔗 SanDisk: Structural Analysis of Multi-Year Memory Shortage and NBM Contracts - 2026.06.08
Hello, SanDisk fans. I am Dotori, an industrial analysis PhD. I will calmly and systematically analyze the macroeconomic environment and micro supply-demand structure surrounding SanDisk recently.
📚 Macroeconomic Environment and the Big Picture of the Industry
Recently, the market is showing a conflict between macroeconomic indicators and the structural growth of the industry. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang mentioned that the memory supply shortage will continue for several years due to the surge in AI demand [2]. In fact, SanDisk's datacenter revenue surged 645% year-over-year, proving this structural demand [2].
However, from a macroeconomic perspective, we are in a period of expanding volatility. As the US nonfarm payrolls for May increased by 172,000, significantly exceeding expectations, concerns about the Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes emerged [3]. Because of this, a liquidity reduction signal was triggered, and the semiconductor sector, which had risen significantly, was the first to undergo a correction, resulting in SanDisk's stock price dropping by 11.39% to close at $1,559 on June 5. Although it closed up 5.26% at $1,641 on June 8, there is an analysis that a market-wide derating and sentiment collapse are underway [6].
⚙️ SanDisk's Structural Contract Model and Valuation Debate
Despite the short-term volatility, Bank of America upgraded SanDisk's price target from $1,550 to $2,100 based on the tight supply-demand balance [1]. According to systematic analysis, this is largely due to the effect of the New Business Model (NBM) recently introduced by SanDisk. Through this long-term supply agreement that combines initial fixed pricing with subsequent variable pricing, SanDisk has already secured more than a third of its fiscal 2027 revenue [1]. With just three contracts signed in the third quarter, it secured a minimum contractual revenue of $42 billion, and no meaningful new supply increase is expected before 2028 or 2029 [1].
On the other hand, structural risks regarding valuation are also being raised. Morningstar pointed out that it is necessary to carefully review the possibility of a bubble regarding SanDisk's recent stock price surge. In addition, there is a critical view that SK Hynix's potential US listing could weaken the scarcity premium enjoyed by SanDisk, and that the current gross margin of 78% may be unsustainable [4].
🏭 Value Chain Differential Benefit Analysis
From the perspective of this big picture of the industry and supply-demand logic, the differential benefits of the semiconductor value chain can be organized into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ranks as follows.
- 1st Rank: Datacenter storage and NAND flash solutions. SanDisk has structurally secured earnings visibility through long-term NBM supply contracts and is a direct beneficiary of AI datacenter expansion.
- 2nd Rank: AI accelerator and GPU ecosystem. NVIDIA maintains high pricing power and a stable competitive advantage even in a memory shortage situation, showing stable growth at the top of the value chain [5].
- 3rd Rank: Next-generation customized memory. SK Hynix is securing next-generation memory demand through a multi-year partnership with NVIDIA, which is a variable that could affect SanDisk's premium in the market in the long term.
Dotori views that despite short-term macroeconomic volatility, structural AI datacenter demand and long-term supply contracts will be the core drivers supporting SanDisk's fundamentals. Therefore, I think an approach that focuses on the multi-year supply shortage cycle and corporate earnings visibility rather than short-term market sentiment changes is valid.
