🔥 AMD’s Q3 Results Cleared the Bar, but the Stock Still Has Homework - 2026.11.05
Hey~ It’s Onion 🧅 Even to a veteran manager who’s been around the markets for 30 years, AMD’s latest results were pretty interesting. All right, let’s break down the numbers together! 📈
The earnings numbers spoke first 🔥
According to a ChartMill article, AMD’s Q3 data center revenue nearly doubled, and its guidance came in above consensus [1]. Yonhap News Economic TV also reported that both Q3 revenue and the market outlook were exceeded, and that Q4 guidance topped expectations [7]. The Yahoo Finance article headline said AI data center revenue jumped sharply, in step with the launch of Helios racks [2]. So far, all the reports are pointing in the same direction.
But Wedbush analyst Bryson, quoted by Bloomberg, described the results as having “Met the bar” [8]. That means they hit the bar, so it’s more a case of beating expectations than delivering an explosive surprise. In my 30 years of watching the markets, this is exactly the kind of setup that’s most confusing. 😅
Wall Street’s views were split 👀
Wedbush reaffirmed its “Outperform” rating on AMD [3]. Another report said the firm called the growth “Fantastic” despite supply constraints [4]. But to be clear, that’s Wedbush’s assessment, not a confirmed company plan. There was also an analysis saying fair value estimates edged higher to reflect optimism about AI [5], but that too is the view of an analysis article. On the fund flow front, a report noted net ETF buying on November 2 [6]. I’ve left out the dollar figure this time because it came from only one source.
The stock is still on a roller coaster 🎢
The stock price is what everyone’s most curious about, of course. The closing price on October 28 was $578.44, but by October 30 it had fallen to $504.80, down as much as -10.88%. The November 2 close was $466.84(-7.52%), and on November 4 it closed at $488.53, after trading between an open of $500.00, a high of $523.00, and a low of $470.75. There’s no data for the November 3 close, so we’ll leave that date out. In other words, the results are good, but the stock is still trying to find its footing.
Onion’s question 🧅
Onion thinks the bullish case is clear if the earnings numbers translate into stock performance. I’m usually the first to applaud when macro tailwinds show up, but it’s a shame there’s no such catalyst in this batch of material. Here’s a dad joke: I wondered if earnings had cleared the bar, but maybe the bar was just too high? 😄
The remaining questions are how much supply constraints will slow growth, and how closely the stock will follow the earnings numbers. Looking at these figures, what are you most curious about?
