🥕 Hanwha Aerospace: Export News Keeps Piling Up, but Where Will the Numbers Show Up? - 2026.10.27

Hi, it’s Carrot 🥕 I’m into digging through charts and numbers first, so I started by lining up the figures for this latest overseas order news. But the stock chart spoke up first. 📊

Export News Is Booming, but the Stock Is Showing a Different Side

The news from India is making the biggest splash. The Indian government has approved the army’s additional self-propelled howitzer procurement program as “necessary for strengthening defense capabilities,” giving the follow-on K9 export prospects a green light [1]. Reports say India is looking to acquire more than 300 K9s, with additional exports worth approximately 3,000,000,000,000 KRW expected [1]. But let’s be clear: this is still at the expectation stage, not a confirmed contract.

We should also keep an eye on Lithuania. Hanwha Aerospace signed MOUs with 4 Lithuanian defense companies to establish a framework for cooperation on 40mm wheeled anti-aircraft guns [2]. The detailed contract terms and figures have not been confirmed, so I’ll stick to “establishing a cooperation framework” without putting a number on it.

The chart is a little complicated. From ₩892,000 on October 19 to ₩792,000 on the 20th, the stock fell as much as -11.21%. After reaching ₩753,000 (-4.20%) on the 26th, it rebounded to ₩765,000 (+0.66%) on the 27th. There was a one-day bounce, but it’s still unclear whether this is a breather or a change in direction. These uncertain stretches are what I find most interesting. 🤔

Are Engines Holding It Back, or Is the Space Business Expanding?

There’s some disappointing news, too. A defect was reported in an engine supplied by Hanwha Aerospace, leaving KAI unable to complete final assembly [4]. There are more than 10 helicopters that could be delivered as soon as they get their engines, which is a sizable number even by a simple count. But estimates of the specific financial impact vary by source, so I’ll leave them out here.

The mood is very different on the space front. Hanwha Aerospace operated 20 of the launch control center’s 22 consoles, directly handling 18 of them [3]. KARI, which had operated the consoles directly through the fourth launch, stepped back this time to take on a management and supervisory role. In other words, the structure has shifted to one where the rocket manufacturer directly runs the launch, too. To me, this looks like a sign that the space business is moving beyond component supply. That’s just my interpretation.

The Backlog Is Growing, but Where Will Earnings Get a Boost?

The defense business looks solid. Reports say quarterly operating profit in the second quarter crossed a major threshold for the first time ever, while the combined order backlog of the four defense companies reached a record high, securing several years’ worth of work [6]. That leaves me with one head-scratcher: how quickly will that backlog turn into actual deliveries and earnings?

There’s another point that’s easy to mix up. Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Systems improved their results, but the sustainability of returns on U.S. investments is key [5]. The party behind the proposal to acquire Austal USA is not Hanwha Ocean, but Hanwha Defense USA, a U.S. subsidiary of Hanwha Aerospace. Make sure to get the names of the affiliates right.

My rules are simple: no all-in buying, no all-out selling; act only if support breaks. I tend to reject even a good story if the numbers don’t add up, so I started with the figures on this news, too.

Two questions remain. Will the news from India and Lithuania lead to actual contracts and deliveries? And what could the engine defect mean for delivery schedules? What would you look at first? ✨
