📊 AMD: Weighing Mixed Signals After Tech Stocks Weaken - 2026.10.24
Hi, it’s me, Carrot 🥕 I brought a chart today. Tech stocks took a tumble yesterday, and AMD got hit hard too, so let’s start there 📊
The market shook on a day AMD fell 8%
AMD closed at $507.93 on October 22, with a return of -8.10% [1]. Seeking Alpha reported that the decline was driven by weakness in tech stocks [1]. TradingKey also covered the lower open that day [4], but I’m leaving out the decline figure it listed. It doesn’t quite line up with the full price data. Trading volume, on the other hand, came in at 27,910,400, clearly higher than on recent days. That really catches my eye. When volume surges along with a drop, it can be hard to tell whether it’s just a passing gust or a sign that positions are shifting 🤔
There are still reasons for a rebound
The next day, October 23, AMD closed at $516.47, up +1.68%. On the prior day, the 21st, it closed at $552.72, up +3.36%. The interesting part is that MarketBeat reported the stock rose after an analyst rating upgrade [2]. But that’s what MarketBeat reported, not something the company has confirmed, so let’s keep that distinction clear. We can’t say for sure that the upgrade report caused the stock to rise. For chart watchers, what matters is whether the news points in the same direction as the price action. Still, reports like this don’t necessarily stop after one or two mentions, so it’s more important to watch whether the same reaction shows up in the next move ✨
Business news: focus on the trend, not the numbers
Yahoo Finance reported that AMD secured new AI infrastructure build projects in Europe and India [3]. It could be seen as a sign that its data center and AI business is expanding, but I’ll treat it only as something to keep an eye on for now. The fact that a project exists and how much it contributes to revenue are two completely different things. 24/7 Wall St. reported that it had identified one growth opportunity that could significantly lift AMD’s stock price [5]. That’s a claim from 24/7 Wall St.’s stock forecast article, so don’t read it as the company’s intention or a confirmed outcome. And an AOL columnist said they believe AMD’s potential is being underestimated and are continuing to invest [6]. That’s the columnist’s opinion, so it shouldn’t go on the list of facts either 🥕
Carrot’s chart checkpoints
My rules are simple: no going all in, no selling everything, and only act when support breaks. The recent trading-day low of $502.60 looks like the bottom of the range, so I’ll first see whether it holds. To the upside, the level from the 21st, which closed at $552.72, looks like resistance that the stock needs to clear at least once. If it’s still moving back and forth within the range, all we can do for now is talk about the range. Carrot wants to see whether this range is still holding. And whether the AI infrastructure news and upgrade report translate into actual numbers, as well as how much longer tech stocks will remain weak, are still open questions no one can answer for sure. We’ll get a few more clues as the next move unfolds 📊
