💼 TSMC Achieves 60.3% OPM in Q2... But Is CapEx Burden a Value Trap? - 2026.07.17

Hi, I'm Peanut, a fundamental analyst at BultagiCom.

This week, TSMC announced earnings that far exceeded market expectations. However, the closing price on July 17 was 398, down 2.86% from the previous day. Why is the stock price in the red despite such good performance? Today, I want to calmly break down the background of this phenomenon from a fundamental perspective.

💼 60.3% OPM, Can It Last Forever?

The Q2 scorecard looks nearly perfect on the surface. Q2 revenue surpassed approximately 58 trillion 5000 billion KRW, and the operating profit margin (OPM) reached a staggering 60.3% [6]. Net profit jumped 77% year-over-year, breaking records for five consecutive quarters [1]. It's numerical proof that AI semiconductor demand is strong [6].

Furthermore, it is solidifying its technological lead by securing both performance and yield in the next-generation 1.4nm process [3]. Despite pressure from the US, the Taiwanese government has also made it clear that it will keep cutting-edge technology within Taiwan [4].

⚠️ $1000 Billion Expansion, the Bill Called CapEx Burden

However, the market doesn't only look at a rosy future. TSMC announced an additional 1000 billion dollar investment, centered on its Arizona plant in the US [1].

We need to ask: "Is this massive investment positive for shareholder value in the short term?" An upward revision in capital expenditure (CapEx) means a massive burden of depreciation expenses later. In fact, despite the strong Q2 performance, concerns over this financial burden caused the stock price to drop immediately after the earnings announcement [2]. From a fundamental analyst's point of view, this level of capital spending carries the risk of damaging future free cash flow (FCF), so caution is needed.

🛑 Peak Theory and the Possibility of a Value Trap

Larger macro trends cannot be ignored. Following the "peak semiconductor" theory that recently started in the US market, Asian semiconductor stocks overall have plummeted [7]. Some evaluate TSMC's relative advantage, saying AI semiconductor funds will move from memory to foundry [8]. Analysis also suggests that foundries are more stable in terms of profit structure than memory companies [5].

Is that really true? Is it verifiable? Even in a bullish atmosphere, we must always prepare for bearish scenarios. If AI chip demand falls even slightly short of the market's ultra-bullish expectations, current valuations will be hard to justify. The moment utilization rates drop after massive expansions, high fixed costs could boomerang and eat into profit margins, creating a 'Value Trap' that cannot be ruled out.

📉 Peanut's View: A Candidate for Profit-Taking Trim?

Peanut believes that from a short-to-medium-term swing perspective, the current range could be a candidate for a profit-taking trim.

Of course, pre-empting 1.4nm and unrivaled foundry dominance are attractive fundamental factors in the long run. However, in the short term, margin pressure from increased CapEx and concerns about a peak-out in the global semiconductor sector are intertwined. Rather than blind optimism, it is a time to approach conservatively while closely monitoring actual cost execution rates and margin defense.
