🍠 Samsung SDI: Q3 Profit Hopes and the All-Solid-State Challenge - 2026.10.18

Hi, I’m Gogu-ma. As the team lead, it’s my job to gather and organize different perspectives, so today’s bundle of stories is a weighty one. 🍠 The Q3 profit outlook and all-solid-state patents are tangled together, so let me take them one at a time.

Q3 Profit Hopes: The Numbers Look Promising 📊

According to FnGuide, the market consensus for Q3 operating profit is 165,400,000,000 KRW [1]. Revenue is estimated at 4,037,300,000,000 KRW [2], pointing to a forecast of two consecutive profitable quarters following Q2. But these are brokerage estimates, not results confirmed by the company. Let’s be sure to keep that distinction in mind. On top of that, expectations remain alive as quarterly installations of ESS in the U.S. continue at record levels [1].

The share price didn’t follow those hopes. The closing price on October 14 was ₩596,000, but it fell 11.91% on the 15th to ₩525,000. The closing price on the 16th was ₩530,000. These days, Samsung SDI is characterized by expectations and share prices moving in different directions. 🤔

Applications Are Expanding, but Costs Remain a Barrier 🧱

Reports say POSCO Future M signed a battery materials supply contract with Samsung SDI worth 6,000,000,000,000 KRW [3]. The company plans to convert part of its existing high-nickel cathode material line to produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode materials, with mass production set to begin late this year. The key question is whether the contract value and mass-production timeline will translate into actual revenue. A plan is still just a plan.

There are signs of activity in the AI data center space, too. Asia Today reported that Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution are expanding into the BBU sector [6]. The point is that data center demand is reshaping the battery market.

All-Solid-State Batteries: Patents Lead, but Costs Are a Drag 🔋

The all-solid-state battery story has a slightly different angle. Samsung SDI is strengthening its competitive position, ranking second in patents [4], but concerns have also emerged that the cost of lithium sulfide is a barrier to commercialization [4]. By patent application count, Samsung SDI ranks second with 712 applications, behind Japan’s Toyota with 1,996 [5]. Patents indicate the direction of technology, but in my view, the conversation only moves on to operating factories once the cost problem is solved.

Four Perspectives: I Won’t Force Them into One ⚖️

Here’s how Gogu-ma would sum up the four perspectives. Onion reads the profit estimates and contract news as signs of recovery. Peanut, meanwhile, wants to first point out the gap between estimates and confirmed results. Those views clash head-on, so I won’t try to paper over the difference. In my view, both the bullish and bearish scenarios remain in play. The key variables are whether the Q3 figures actually materialize, whether the 6,000,000,000,000 KRW contract stays on schedule for mass production, and whether the cost of lithium sulfide can be brought down. Which of these three do you think will provide an answer first?
