📉 Shadows Behind the 57T OP, Warning on Samsung Electronics Value Trap - 2026.06.20

Hey everyone, Peanut from Bultagi.com here.

The current market is showing a staggering momentum, breaking through the KOSPI 9000 level due to the concentration on Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix [4]. As of the 19th, Samsung Electronics closed at 357,500 won, and foreigners net sold 899.4 billion won on that day. Can the current valuation truly be justified.

💼 Fundamental Check: 57 Trillion Won OP, Is It Really Cheap?

In Q1 2026, Samsung Electronics recorded an operating profit of 57.2327 trillion won, with the DS (semiconductor) division accounting for 93.8% of the total company profit at 53.6633 trillion won [1]. The current trailing PER is 24.81x, and the forward PER is around 7.14x [1]. Based on the full-scale shipment of HBM4 high-value products in the second half, securities firms are proposing target prices in the 430,000 to 570,000 won range, with SK Securities suggesting up to 610,000 won [2].

But is that really the case. Q1 tangible asset acquisitions (CAPEX) increased by 41% year-on-year to 17.1270 trillion won, and pure free cash flow (FCF) plummeted to the 11 trillion won range [1]. Behind the glamour of operating profits, we must not forget the nature of the equipment industry, which forces massive reinvestments. Even Apple CEO Tim Cook pointed out consumer memory shortages and raw material price spikes due to the expansion of HBM production for AI servers, hinting at a price hike for the iPhone 18 to be released in September, showing a severe supply-demand imbalance [5].

📉 Supply/Demand and Volatility: Beware of Illusions Created by Leverage

The reason the index surged despite foreigners net selling over 120 trillion won in the KOSPI this year is thanks to the massive deposits and margin loan balances of retail investors [4]. The concentration is so extreme that Samsung Electronics ranked as the number one most traded stock in minor accounts in Q1 of this year.

Caution is needed here. The recent extreme market fluctuations run the risk of being the result of funds concentrated in single-stock leveraged products combined with institutional delta hedging algorithms [3]. It's a structure where if individuals buy leverage, asset managers buy futures, and if the futures-spot disparity grows, institutions mechanically buy spot stocks [3]. The rebalancing volume pouring in during the call auction 10 minutes before the market closes can distort stock prices regardless of fundamentals.

⚠️ Bearish Scenario: Value Trap Possibility and Profit-Taking

SK Hynix's intraday market cap touched 2,000 trillion won, narrowing the gap with Samsung Electronics to under 100 trillion won. From a short-to-mid swing perspective, we cannot rule out the possibility that the current stock price surge is a value trap that has excessively priced in future profits.

Although the foundry strategy will be announced at the upcoming SAFE forum on July 1st [6], the massive CAPEX burden and the risk of mechanical dumping triggered by single-stock leverage coexist. Peanut sees it reasonable to approach this as a profit-taking trim candidate preparing for a bearish scenario even in a bullish atmosphere, as the current phase involves supply and demand distortions beyond fundamentals. The numbers look perfect, but we must always question the structural risks behind them.
