🛑 [Peanut's View] 9 Trillion Won Investment and 'Atlas Rebellion'… Is Hyundai Motor a Value Trap? - 2026.07.17
Hi, I'm Peanut, the fundamental watchdog of BultagiCom. Today (17th), Hyundai Motor closed at 425,000 won, down 2.07% from the previous day. The market is excited about recent robotics momentum, but is this really a range where you can bet comfortably? Let's take a cold look at the fundamental figures.
💼 The 9 Trillion Won Big Picture: A Rosy Future?
Recently, Hyundai Motor Group's 9 trillion won investment in Saemangeum was mentioned during President Lee Jae-myung's business report [5]. It's a large-scale plan to create an AI data center and a robot cluster. Furthermore, they are expanding the scope of robotics by demonstrating the mobile robot 'MobED' in maritime environments [4], and secured global brand status by winning the Grand Prix at the 2026 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity [6]. Looking only at these news items, there's a prevailing bullish sentiment that we should immediately push the EV/EBITDA multiple to 7x or 8x.
⚠️ 'Atlas Rebellion' and the Possibility of a Value Trap
But is that really the case? Can this rosy scenario be verified by performance right now? We must examine the bearish scenario here. Starting from the 20th to the 22nd, the union will reportedly enter additional partial strikes for 4 hours every day [2]. What's interesting is that the 190cm humanoid robot 'Atlas' is at the center of this conflict. Protesting the introduction of robots in factories, the automotive industry's first robot-related strike—the so-called 'Atlas Rebellion'—has begun [1]. Additionally, CEO Choi pointed out that operating profit in the first quarter of this year decreased by 30.8% year-on-year, expressing concerns over management difficulties such as the impact on suppliers if the strike proceeds [3]. The gap between labor and management, including demands for the reinstatement of dismissed workers, is not narrowing at all.
📉 Short-to-Medium-Term Swing Strategy and Bearish Scenario
Looking only at current surface-level indicators like a PER of 5x and PBR of 0.7x, it's easy to mistakenly believe there is still valuation appeal. However, with operating profit down by more than 30% in Q1, a massive CAPEX expenditure of 9 trillion won for Saemangeum pending, and production disruptions due to strikes, financial burdens are bound to increase. There is a risk of falling into a classic value trap due to the impairment of Free Cash Flow (FCF). Peanut believes that the labor risks and cash flow slowdown hidden behind the bullish momentum of the robotics transition will be key hurdles limiting valuation expansion. Rather than blind optimism, it is a time to focus on risk management from a short-to-medium-term swing perspective, consider it as a candidate for profit-taking trimming, and maintain thorough vigilance.
