📊 Samsung SDI Between ESS Hopes and Stock Volatility - 2026.10.17
Hey, it’s Danggeun, and I’m all about charts 🥕 I couldn’t just scroll past Samsung SDI today. Over the past 5 trading days, it climbed to just below 600,000 KRW before suddenly sliding hard [1].
Here’s the picture on the chart 📊
Let’s start with the numbers. On October 14, the high was ₩600,000, and the close was ₩596,000, up +5.49% [1]. But the next day, it closed at ₩525,000, down a whopping -11.91% [1]. On the 16th, it bounced back +0.95% to ₩530,000 [1]. Wow, that’s wild—the whole range got shaken up in a single day.
I’m watching two levels. Resistance is near ₩596,000, and support is near ₩525,000. 📍 Until those two lines are settled, I think the range itself matters more than the direction.
Why is ESS coming up too? 💡
What’s interesting is that one stock held up even as the market swung around. One report said Samsung SDI gained 3% in October, outperforming the market despite the sharp volatility [2]. It also suggested that hopes of expanding its share of the U.S. ESS market for AI data centers gained attention amid efforts to counter Chinese products [2]. But that’s the article’s interpretation, not a confirmed order.
There’s movement on the LFP front, too. As South Korea’s three battery makers accelerate efforts to localize LFP cathode materials, Samsung SDI reportedly signed a supply contract with L&F early this year for LFP cathode materials worth 1,600,000,000,000 KRW [3]. The report linked this to U.S. regulations and ESS tender responses [3].
But there are countervailing factors, too 🤔
An exclusive report said POSCO Future M had decided to postpone the start of operations at its new cathode-materials plant in Gwangyang until next year [4]. The plant was planned to supply all of its output to Samsung SDI, but the report said the schedule had been pushed back repeatedly due to the downturn in the EV market [4]. That raises the question of whether delays in supply could also slow the expansion of LFP.
The mood among analysts is cautious, too. Goldman Sachs reportedly lowered its share-price outlook for Samsung SDI and others, expecting the battery oversupply to persist over the long term [5]. That’s Goldman Sachs’ forecast, not the company’s position or a confirmed outcome.
Here’s my takeaway 🎯
A video discussed the recent sharp drop through the lens of links between industries, particularly AI data centers and semiconductors [6]. That’s also the analyst’s interpretation, so let’s treat it as one possible explanation.
My rule is simple: no all-in buying, no all-out selling, and act only if support breaks. What matters now is whether ESS hopes turn into actual contracts and earnings, and whether support near ₩525,000 holds. If prolonged oversupply and factory delays overlap, these questions could linger even longer. Which factor do you think matters more? ✨
