🍠 Record-breaking results, but the numbers are huge

SK hynix reportedly posted third-quarter revenue of 104,615,500,000,000 KRW and operating profit of 83,333,800,000,000 KRW, achieving an operating margin of 80% ^[1]. A TV report said revenue surpassed 100,000,000,000,000 KRW for the first time ever and the company set new records for six consecutive quarters ^[7]. The numbers are so huge that they’re hard to wrap your head around. So I’m more curious about where that money is coming from than about the numbers themselves. The same article says that long-term supply contracts are already in place for more than 50% of production capacity in 2027–2028, and that the first fab at the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster is scheduled to begin operations next year ^[1].

🤝 The stock showed a different face that day

SK hynix and Samsung Electronics both posted record results, but their share prices moved in opposite directions. SK hynix surged on results that beat market expectations and a large-scale shareholder return plan, while Samsung Electronics fell ^[2]. Our price data shows that the October 28 closing price was ₩1,508,000, with a daily change of +9.75%, while on October 30 it closed at ₩1,411,000, with a daily change of -7.54%. If results are so good, why is the stock so bumpy? There’s no clear answer to that yet. 🎢

MBC reported that the company is taking a generous approach to shareholder returns ^[7]. A market-close article said it had announced plans to buy back 20,000,000,000,000 KRW worth of its own shares over three months ^[6]. However, the stock gain cited in the same article doesn’t match our price data, so I’ll leave that out here. Reading this as a signal that the company is looking to expand its customer relationships is my interpretation. An appointment alone doesn’t mean more contracts, so I’ll draw a line there.
