🥜 Hyundai Motor, India 15,500,000,000 USD Investment and Stock Price Move in Different Directions - 2026.10.14
Hi, it’s Peanut. I love checking the numbers, so today I spread out Hyundai Motor’s figures again. 📉 The key question is whether the major investment in India will support the share price or get overshadowed by other factors.
India 15,500,000,000 USD, a bigger picture
Hyundai Motor has completed its new plant in Pune, India, and Executive Chair Euisun Chung said the company would open a new chapter in India [1]. Hyundai Motor Group plans to invest 15,500,000,000 USD across production, R&D, supply chains, and new businesses [2], with the aim of making India a key hub for its push into the Global South [1]. Chung’s meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the prime minister’s residence in New Delhi on the 13th was also part of that effort, reports say [2].
But this is a plan and a discussion of investment scale. The reports don’t yet say how quickly the plant will be up and running or translate into sales. Will it really happen? The picture won’t be complete until verifiable numbers emerge.
Why is the stock moving on its own?
Today’s closing price was ₩313,000. It rose from the previous day’s ₩311,500, but remains below the level it reached on October 2, at ₩347,000. In the meantime, reports said brokerages had been cutting their price targets one after another [3]. Judging by the direction alone, the wave of price-target cuts appears to have weighed on the stock. I won’t include specific target prices here, since they come from only one source.
The Korea Economic Daily’s headline described Hyundai Motor shares falling while Hanon Systems rose on its own [6]. But without details from the article, the cause can’t be confirmed. I won’t speculate about it.
Hybrids hesitate, EVs keep moving
An analysis suggested that consumers put off purchases of popular hybrids as new models such as the Avante, Tucson, and Grandeur were clustered in the second half of the year [4]. That’s an analyst’s view, not a fact confirmed by the company. The mood is different for EVs. At the 2026 Paris Motor Show, Hyundai Motor presented the Bayon and Tucson N Line SUVs, as well as the Staria Cargo and IONIQ 3, for European customers [7]. The exhibition also featured its autonomous driving partnership with Waymo and hands-on experiences with robotics technology [7].
Here’s one more point to note. One article says that Hyundai Motor Group, now the world’s third-largest seller, is shifting its focus to physical AI, including autonomous driving, robotics, and AI factories [5]. It says the transformation began with electrification and higher-value vehicle models [5]. The scope is growing, but whether profits will keep pace is another question.
Kim Seong-hun, CEO of KM Partners, shared his perspective on Hyundai Motor’s shares, which have fallen by half, in a video [8]. The video discusses losses suffered by investors who bought at the peak, but any claims about trading direction are only his personal views and can’t be treated as evidence.
Bear case, and questions that remain ⚠️
If sales and earnings don’t recover just because the stock looks cheap, it may not be undervalued at all—it may simply stay at a low level. That’s the possibility of a value trap. Peanut sees this as a short- to medium-term swing trade setup and will keep the bear case open while watching for verifiable indicators.
Three variables remain: whether the delay in hybrid purchases in the second half shows up in actual sales figures, how quickly India’s 15,500,000,000 USD investment translates into sales, and whether there will be signs that the downward trend in price targets is stopping. Whichever of these gets answered first will set the stage for the next move.
