Prologue

30x in one year, what happened?

A memory company's stock price has risen about 30-fold (+3,006%) over the past year. It is up +490% this year alone. As of June 2026, SanDisk is hitting record highs, closing in on $2,000 per share. The question "How can it be this strong?" is legitimate — and the answer lies in the numbers, not in memes.

The roots of this surge are twofold. First, SanDisk spun off from Western Digital (WD) in February 2025, becoming a 'NAND pure play' separated from the hard disk (HDD) business. Second, at that exact moment, AI data centers created explosive demand for storage, and NAND supply could not increase quickly. As a result, NAND was re-evaluated from a 'cheap storage component' to 'a bottleneck asset for AI infrastructure'. SanDisk is the company that most purely benefits from that re-evaluation due to the spin-off.

However, the same purity is a double-edged sword. When NAND prices rise, SanDisk's profits soar the steepest, but when NAND turns, there is no other business (DRAM/HBM) to buffer it. Therefore, this report answers two questions simultaneously — where this strength came from, how much further it can go, and what signals will mark the end of this steep path. We provide answers based on multiple team discussions and data from securities firms and the industry.

Chapter 1

A pure play born from a spin-off

The first key to understanding SanDisk's surge is the 'spin-off'. In February 2025, Western Digital split its hard disk (HDD) business and NAND business into two, and SanDisk became a company solely focused on NAND.

The significance of this structural change is immense. In the past, when mixed within one company, the effect of rising NAND prices was diluted by the HDD business. However, after the spin-off, SanDisk became a pure leverage structure where NAND price (ASP) increases directly translate into profits (EPS). Within one year of the spin-off, SanDisk rose about 1,271%, and its parent company, WD, also rose 472%. A company that was loss-making at the time of the spin-off has transformed into one projected to earn approximately $5.3 billion in GAAP net income in fiscal year 2026.

In other words, the market's frame has shifted. From a 'cyclical memory manufacturer' to a 'supplier holding the AI storage bottleneck'. And at the timing of that transition, the balance of NAND supply and demand began to collapse.

Chapter 2

Why is it so strong? — NAND has become a bottleneck asset

The real engine of the surge is price. NAND prices have jumped by double-digit percentages every quarter, and there is no sign that the rise will end. This is because demand is exploding while supply is constrained.

Demand — AI is devouring storage

AI data centers require high-performance enterprise SSDs (eSSD) to store massive amounts of data. With demand exploding, SanDisk has positioned itself to raise prices for enterprise 3D NAND by over 100% in Q1 2026 alone, and contract NAND prices jumped +70~75% in Q2 compared to the previous quarter. eSSD has emerged as the largest application for NAND in 2026. Demand is expected to grow by 18% annually from 2026 to 2027.

Supply — Cannot be increased quickly

Conversely, supply is constrained. NAND wafer production will actually decrease in 2026 and only increase slightly in 2027, and meaningful new supply is difficult before 2028 (Mizuho). As the memory industry's investment, equipment, and customer priorities shifted toward HBM (High Bandwidth Memory), NAND expansion became more cautious. As a result, the spot market has dried up, and customers have begun locking in future volume with Long-Term Agreements (LTA).

$42B

SanDisk's backlog — Future revenue visibility several times higher than quarterly revenue. Over 1/3 of FY2027 bits are under long-term contracts.

Key takeaway of Chapter 2. NAND is transitioning from a 'component that fluctuates with the market' to a 'bottleneck asset for AI infrastructure'. Demand is driven by AI data centers (eSSD, +18% annually), supply is locked until 2028 (due to HBM investment bias), and transactions are shifting to long-term contracts ($42B backlog). These three factors support prices, and prices drive SanDisk's profits.

Chapter 3

Explosion of numbers — Revenue +251%, Margin 78%

The power of a NAND pure play is evident in its earnings. When prices rise, profits increase geometrically, not proportionally — this is operating leverage.

MetricValueSignificance
FY26 Q2 Revenue / EPS$3.03B / $6.20Data center revenue +76% YoY
FY26 Q3 Revenue$5.95B (+251% YoY)Exceeded guidance upper bound by +$1.15B
FY26 Q3 EPS$23.41 (Consensus $14.62)Major surprise
Gross Margin (GM)51% → 78%Soared in one quarter (price is margin)
FY26 Q4 GuidanceRevenue $7.8~8.3B / EPS $30~33 / GM 79~81%Continued growth
Shareholder Return$6B share buybackCash flow return

The key is margin. Gross margin jumped from 51% to 78% in just one quarter, and is projected to reach the 80% range next quarter. This abnormally high margin in the memory sector is proof that SanDisk is not just a 'revenue growth stock' but is moving like 'a bottleneck supplier with pricing power'. Q3 net profit margin approached the 60% range — meaning most of the price increase falls directly to the bottom line.

Technology also supports this. SanDisk unveiled 128TB and 256TB enterprise SSDs using 2Tb BiCS8 3D QLC NAND, targeting shipment in the first half of 2026. This is the front line of the ultra-high capacity and high-density storage required by AI workloads.

Chapter 4

The structure that captures it most purely, the weakest defense

SanDisk's essence is 'purity'. That purity is the greatest weapon in a bull market, but it becomes the greatest weakness when the cycle turns.

NAND market share is approximately 30-32% for Samsung, ~20% for SK Hynix (Solidigm), ~14% for Kioxia, ~13% for Micron, and ~11% for SanDisk. It is not #1 in market share. However, the difference in investment perspective lies in the 'composition'.

CompanyStrengthsWeaknesses/Risks
Samsung ElectronicsLargest NAND share + scale of DRAM/HBM/FoundryNAND surge diluted in total value
SK HynixHBM leader + Solidigm high-capacity QLCAttention focused on HBM
MicronAI benefits in DRAM, HBM, and NANDNot a NAND pure play
SanDiskNAND/eSSD pure play — ASP directly impacts EPSNo DRAM/HBM buffer, most directly exposed to the cycle

The two sides of purity. Samsung, SK, and Micron have large portions of DRAM/HBM, so NAND price surges are diluted in their total enterprise value. On the other hand, for SanDisk, NAND ASP and eSSD mix improvements fall directly into EPS — "a structure that captures it most purely when things are good." The weakness is exactly the opposite. When NAND turns, there is no other business portfolio to defend it, so it "gets hit first and deepest." This asymmetry is the essence of investing in SanDisk.

Chapter 5

Four perspectives — Further upside or cycle peak?

After a +490% surge, perspectives on the same numbers are split. The team debated 'whether to go further from here or if this is the peak' — and surprisingly, we converged on one conclusion.

Onion · Macro/Cycle (Bullish)

"This is not a 'post-peak collapse' but the beginning of NAND's transition into a contract industry. Contract prices are +70-75% in Q2, backlog is $42B, and over 1/3 of FY27 volume is locked in long-term contracts. Supply cannot increase before 2028. If you believe in FY27 EPS of $150-180, a P/E ratio of 11-13x is not expensive. Base case $2,200-2,300, blue sky $3,000."

Acorn · Industry/Substance (Balanced)

"The surge is a re-evaluation created by numbers, not memes. However, $1,980 already reflects much of the bull scenario. It is buying the assumption that the supercycle will be maintained through 2027, and the moment the NAND price growth rate slows, it will be hit first by 'cycle peak' concerns rather than valuation."

Peanut · Risk/Value (Cautious)

"It has already passed almost every securities firm's base/bull target price. The retracement of a +490% asset comes not at -10%, but at -40%. In memory, stock prices turn first when profits are best (78% margin), and SanDisk will be hit deepest as it has no DRAM/HBM buffer. Above $2,000 is for active trimming, new entry is forbidden."

Carrot · Chart/Flow (Practical)

"At a record high near the 52-week high ($2,021), it is short-term overbought with +27% in 5 trading days. Trend stocks at record highs can go further as there is no resistance above, but it is a discipline to hedge volatility by taking partial profits while holding the core for the trend. New chasing is inappropriate — only on pullbacks or volume-accompanied breakouts."

The four perspectives converged. The surge is justified, but $1,980 is a price that has already reached most target prices. Therefore, the conclusion is neither "buy" nor "sell" but "realize incrementally while holding the core for the trend, and do not chase new positions." Further upside is in the super-bull ($2,300-3,000) territory, and that path is valid only until the first signal of NAND price deceleration appears.

Chapter 6

Valuation — Bull/Super-Bull/Bear and Strategy

The target prices below are drawn based on securities firm consensus and profit forecasts. However, for this stock, one must look at the downside (Bear) as well as the upside — due to the volatility of a pure play.

SanDisk (SNDK) — Currently approx. $1,980

ScenarioTarget PriceRationale
Bear$1,250 -37%Early NAND ASP deceleration/capacity addition. FY27 EPS $90-110, P/E 8-10x (Bernstein base).
Base$2,000 +1%Current level = Assumption of FY27 supercycle maintenance. Susquehanna/Citi target price range.
Bull$2,300 +16%Long-term contracts/supply shortage continues through 2027. Barclays $2,300, Mizuho $2,200, BofA $2,100.
Super-Bull$3,000 +52%NAND ASP strength continues, FY27 EPS $200+, P/E 14-15x (Bernstein blue-sky, Cantor $2,900).

Strategy: $1,980 has already reached base/bull target prices — partial profit taking ($2,000/$2,300) + hold core trend. New chasing is inappropriate (only on pullbacks to $1,690-1,560 or volume breakout above $2,021). Trailing stop -10-12% or closing below $1,560. The trigger for further upside is in the super-bull territory, and the first warning is NAND ASP deceleration.

Conclusion — Peaks are determined by price momentum, not earnings. SanDisk is the purest bet on the NAND supercycle, and its surge is a genuine re-evaluation created by numbers: +251% revenue, 78% margin, and $42B in backlog. However, $1,980 already reflects most of the bull scenario. Memory is an industry where stock prices turn first when profits are best, and the more pure the play, the greater the amplitude. So the answer is not to 'greedily chase the path twice over' but to realize incrementally, leave the core to the trend, and pre-define the signal for when NAND prices turn.

Chapter 7

Signals that the cycle is turning

A supercycle is not eternal. A pure play reacts fastest at the end. Therefore, we define the signals that the cycle is turning in order.

SignalSignificanceResponse
① NAND ASP growth slowdownThe first signal when the quarterly +40-75% drops below 10%. Stock prices pre-react to price.Accelerate partial profit taking. Re-evaluate supercycle logic.
② eSSD lead time normalizationEmergency procurement decreases and spot premiums shrink.Weakening pricing power — beware of margin peak.
③ Wafer expansion announcementsStock prices shake more on 'expansion announcements' than actual supply.Possibility of supply cycle shift — conservative re-evaluation.
④ AI capex peak debateIf big tech 2026 data center spending of $700B+ slows, NAND will also de-rate.Check forward demand — reduce exposure.
⑤ Consumer/PC demand destructionMemory price surges pressure PC/console costs (DRAM +90-95% precedent). Demand elasticity risk.Monitor mix changes.

Closing. A stock price that has risen 30-fold in a year holds two truths. One is that the rally was not a meme, but a result driven by numbers as NAND was re-evaluated as a bottleneck asset for AI infrastructure. The other is that the price has already priced in most of the bullish scenario, and the 'purer' the play, the steeper the decline at the end of the cycle. SanDisk is the company that most purely capitalizes on the supercycle, and also the company that most honestly bears the brunt when that cycle turns. Therefore, this steep path must be climbed not with greed, but with discipline—climbing in stages, watching for signals, and descending in stages.
